The bible is very clear that man IS the soul and a soul CAN die. But for some reason there are those that think the soul is 'imortal', which is NOT supported by scriptures!
Reference: Matthew 10:28, And fear not them which kill (G5658) the body, but are not able to kill (G5658) the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy (G622) both soul and body in hell.
G5658 apokteinw from 575 and kteino (to slay); to kill outright; figuratively, to destroy:--put to death, kill, slay.
G622 apollumi from 575 and the base of 3639; to destroy fully (reflexively, to perish, or lose), literally or figuratively:--destroy, die, lose, mar, perish.
Added note: The death of the soul at the hands of God carries the image of a more complete destruction process than a 'simple' death, remembering that there are two deaths promised for some people.
Matthew 26:38
Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."
He told them, "My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."
