1 Corinthians 16:1-2

Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God has prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

Today's discussion focus is on caring for the poor believers in our church and community so they too will not be in want or need. This speaks to God's provisional care in that He made provisions for all our needs.

Paul instructs the believers at Galatia on how to make sure the less fortunate needs are met through giving. God blesses each of us according to His good pleasure; therefore, we are to bless others by giving a portion of our blessings. God gives us more than what we need to meet our needs so we can help meet the needs of others. Using this strategy, the less fortunate is cared for and there is always enough to go around.

Paul's instruction for giving to the poor at Jerusalem raises the issue of the church being the one stop shop meeting the needs of its community. People come to the church for food, clothes, money and help with housing as well as their spiritual needs.

Giving brings into focus tithing, which is giving God ten percent of what He has blessed us with because all belongs to God.

Giving is a form of worship because we serve God when we give.
