Sister Toni, I too am very fond of wearing hats. I found, through study, that the covering of the head in 1 Corinthians 11 refers to women who are married. Those women who did not cover their heads (with hats, lace circles, doilies, etc.) were women who did not respect or honor their head - as Christ is the head of man. Therefore, the hat represents the honor we give to our husbands, as our husbands give honor to Christ who is their head.

I also have long locs - which I have referred to the OT Nazarite. So, I guess, according to many beliefs, I have a double covering. The hair signifies, from my study, that it is a mantle or veil (covering) for my individual covering. As a wife, I cover my head to honor my husband.

Also, remember that 1 Corinthians 11 is reprehension from Paul to the Church in Corinth. History also plays a part of defining who we are in this day and time. In our sometimes painful growth, we must build on our examples given to new circumstances.

I believe Church Hats are a man's tradition. There is nowhere in the Word of God which tells us to wear them. In 1 Corinthians 11:15, it tells us “but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering”.

Not all black churches have the tradition of the hat. The church I started in didn't have that tradition and only wore hats every once in a while just like where I am now. I think for the most part it depends on the people who are there. I've visited places where even some of the older women saints didn't wear hats, while some did. But yes, it'll always be a tradition, just many places no longer hold them as a main tradition.

Wearing hats to church for women come from a deeper meaning than supporting businesses or some community tradition...

Its biblical. I Corinthians TELL women that if they pray or prophesy they are to COVER their head.
