I listened to Rev. Jeremiah Wright teach/preach on the music in our African related culture.
He spoke from Psalms 37:23-38 as a background. He mentioned the work, play, love, worship and other songs songs we sing and most importantly the meter in which African based music is rendered. And then he gave, well sung, musical examples of the music.
He spoke of how we have learned the diatonic music scale of seven notes, when we had a pentatonic scale of five notes.
Any musicians out there, music theorist or any who just know about spirituals, blues, R&B, and so on I invite your comments.

I think african american gospel is more influenced by styles african americans developed after they got to america(The blues prescence is felt the strongest). I believe latin america(and carib) churches music are more closer to west african gospel

typical ghana gospel song(pretty close to the people who would have been the ancestors of american blacks)

Typical amharic(ethiopian east africa) song

Both are without the blues influence african american gospel has(thus they sound very different). I didnt add southern africa because their gospel music was developed well past the time african americans were sent to america.
