Do you take the word of God personal?

I and my husband had an interesting conversation regarding a bible study. It was stated in the bible study that we only want to discuss the bible, and not take it personal. This really puzzled me, I know, no other way to take the word of God but as personal, because it is the power of God unto salvation.

What are your thoughts on the word of God being taught as personal, as I would say lively.
