Martine, a 23-year-old artist from New York, arrives in Los Angeles to stay in the pool house of a family living in the hip and hilly community of Silver Lake. Peter, the father, has agreed to help Martine complete sound design on her art film as a favor to his wife. Martine innocently enters the seemingly idyllic life of this open-minded family with two kids and a relaxed Southern California vibe. Like a bolt of lightning, her arrival sparks a surge of energy that awakens suppressed impulses in everyone and forces them to confront their own fears and desires.

Sensitively written, nicely shot, expertly acted, and intelligently ambiguous, “Nobody Walks” still manages to send you out with a shrug. What’s missing from this tale of privileged West Coast infidelity? Urgency, maybe — a sense that the dramatic stakes matter as much to the filmmakers as to their characters. Instead, director Ry Russo-Young backs off from the messy, in-your-face heat of her 2009 festival favorite, “You Won’t Miss Me” and seems content to coolly observe.

It’s a frustrating little paradox. This languid slice of Los Angeles life features an appealing cast of actors playing characters who are all surface and impulse — someone is constantly coming onto someone else — but their actions seem to carry low stakes. It’s a sensory experience, featuring an intriguing use of sound design, but any tension that arises ultimately feels like it’s in the service of nothing.
