This suggests trying to justify a mistake or failure or to make it seem less serious, in order to escape being blamed or punished... something said to explain an offense or failure.

People who fail to succeed in life mostly make excuses. The downfall of man (Adam and Eve) was the refusal of accepting mistake they committed. They were banished out from the Garden of Eden not really because they sinned, but because Adam blamed God for giving him a woman and Eve also blamed the Lucifer. They blamed their conduct on someone else, and refused to accept their fault and apologise.

(Genesis 3:12 – 13 – 12) “And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.”

In this research work I found out that many who could not make it in life is because of the blame game on others. Many unsuccessful Christians acted the same way as Adam and Eve.  Some put blame on their parents, guidance, and the society when they are not able to make it in life. One elderly man I confronted with a question ‘why some people are not able to make it in life? He answered by using his personal life as an example. He said, he had all the opportunities to be successful in life but he thought the parents were successful financially and hence there was not the need for him to fight for his future. But when the parents died, then that he realised life is not what he thought. All businesses that the parents left behind being the elder son and the responsibility bestowed on him, he totally failed to manage the businesses. He had no idea of how the parents were managing the businesses and the businesses collapsed. He ended up selling the building structures and other office equipment.

Many students who fail in examination usually put blame on their teachers, headmasters, invigilators, and even their sponsors. When a student passes an examination then the student is brilliant but when he fails then he was not taught well by the teacher or the invigilator frustrated him or her or the headmaster did not provide the resources for learning. Statistically, it is hard for a failure to accept his or her mistake, and rather put blame on others. This has greatly affected the progress in life of others.

Failure to take responsibility is a failure to achieve greatness. What Christians ought to understand is - key to greatness is responsibility.

Charles Godfm also stated in his book titled ‘enemies of success’, (2014 – p3), that everybody is blaming one another but it is only when you take responsibility for who you are, what you have become, and the decisions you have made will you reach your divine destiny.

In 2010 FIFA world cup hosted by South Africa, when the Ghana senior national team failed to beat Uruguay, they put the blame on Luis Suarez after he had used his hand to remove the air ball from entering the net.

Excuses, no matter how great they are cannot lead to success. Excuses - the genesis of success failure.

If people especially Christians will learn how to accept mistakes and find solution to avoid future occurrence, failure can be overcome. If Christians learn how to be focused and determined in life, excuses will not be their anthem.

"Excuses are tools of the incompetent, and those who specialise in them seldom go far."

"Difficulty on the way to victory is opportunity for God to work". (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, www.tentmaker.org/Quotes)

An excuse is worse than a lie, for an excuse is a lie, guarded. (Alexander Pope www.tentmaker.org/Quotes)

“We have more ability than will power, and it is often an excuse to ourselves that we imagine that things are impossible.” (François de la Rochefoucauld, www.tentmaker.org/Quotes)
