Preachers need REAL classroom training as well as OJT (On the Job Training) in order to be effective ministers. Unqualified preachers are killing churches!

In too many of our churches (I am talking to Black folks) we have the ancient slave mentality that says, “I don’t need to go to school to be a preacher, I got the anointing!” Well during the days of slavery and Jim Crow we didn’t have an opportunity to go to Seminary or Bible Colleges. My grandfather was a deacon and his brother was a pastor back in the days when folks only got a grade school education and had to quit because they had to help pick tobacco. My forefathers made due the best they could under harsh circumstances. Now there is NO excuse for a preacher not getting formal training! You may not be able to afford Harvard or Princeton Theological Seminary, but every denomination should have a local Bible school. Most churches today have their own Bible Institutes or Schools. When you accepted the call to preach you also accepted the call to discipleship (training). Jesus spent 3 years training His disciples for ministry. He taught them how to pray, how to cast out devils, how to lay hands on the sick, how to carry themselves, and how to make more disciples. I am disgusted at how easy it is to be ordained in our churches. Just because a brother or sister can testify loud or run their mouth doesn’t mean they are called to preach! If they are called they will be willing to be trained BEFORE being given a piece of paper ordaining them. Remember this, if the preacher is ignorant and unlearned, then the people will be too! The gospel preacher must devote his (or her) life to purity of doctrine. Paul warned Timothy to avoid fables and old wives tales. It’s very easy for preachers to get involved in the “flavor of the month” teachings.

a preacher's first calling is a calling to preperation... and yes, you're right that many of preachers make shipwreck out of many of congregations because of their ignorance of the Word of God... however, I must warn agains those who simply look at a seminary education as a validation of one's calling... the reason why I say this is because of the way many of seminaries are ran today... today, there are many of seminaries that have many people enrolled who are seeking the ministry as a career opposed to a calling... so anybody that could pass a knowledge test and have money to cover their expenses could enroll in seminary... I remember a book that I read by Charles Spurgeon, in this book Charles Spurgeon explained how he was the dean of the seminary and there was a young man that wanted to enroll in the seminary... in his interview with the young man Charles Spurgeon explained how he had to deny the young man acceptance in the seminary because the young man was seeking to make a professional career vs. being called by God to a servants work... oh, if seminaries were ran like this today...many of congregations call many of preachers just because they have a piece of lambskin to state they're trained... but what are they really trained in? many of seminaries are simply cemetaries... they are killing many of congregations... there's no universal doctrine or beliefs being taught... and half of the professors in many of these well known seminaries aren't even Christians...

I advise preachers to first learn all they could from their pastor and congregation before they enroll into seminary... their first training starts at home and then they're to go and enroll in a seminary that has Christian professors and that are teaching Biblical doctrines...

the question isn't should one get a seminary education... but, which seminary should one be educated by?

"seminaries don't prove how much one knows, it proves how little one has learned..."
the annointing is the validation of one's calling...
Pastor Kareem,

This is a good discussion board
Yes indeed,

There are LOTS of IGNORANT and inexperienced Leaders out there....!
I pray that God Almighty will open all our Leaders eyes and ears that they can hear and see, and learn how to educate their congregations the TRUTH BIBLICAL WAY in Jesus name.

I pray that God Almighty will continue uses use mightly in Jesus name.

What if your pastor is ignorant? This is often a problem, I had a pastor that discouraged me from going to Bible College, the problem was he was insecure. We need to promote the anointing AND training they go hand and hand!
I've been there and experienced that... I agree we need to promote the anointing as well as a proper Biblical education...
I thank u all for this discussion because as a new preacher myself I want to get as much as I can in training as I can and try to pour as much knowledge so I can be affective to others.
Minister, Kareem A. Christian infant you said it all bible schools are pouring out impurities into the Christ's ministry, it is God who call as it in Ephesians 4:11, but people are just attending these seminary to just bring curse on theirselves, because bibles school has been done away, so even if you desire it, then that fellow must be under someone who has gotten the calling, so that you will trained and then work under your master as Apostle Paul trained Timothy.
so this schools are really bringing the anger of God on many.
"My people PERISH because of a lack of knowlege"
self education is the best education.
