I'm glad to be in a forum to ask this question of anyone..I've seen the title "Chief Apostle" on this site. But I have no precedence in Scripture for this. The only " Chief " reference I know of is the Chief Shepherd, that Being Christ?

1 Peter 5:4
And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

Even Peter (one of the original Apostles) referred to Paul (The One called out of due season) as "our brother Paul" and not "our Apostle Paul...

2 Peter 3:15
And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

Mind you, I am aware of reference to: Chief Captain, Chief of Bakers, Chief Butler, Chief of the House of the Fathers, etc, etc,.... but no Chief Apostle...

I'm asking because It just seems, not picking, and meaning absolutely no disrespect, self elevating. Could someone show me this reference. I'm all for learning something new in God's Word...

An Apostle establishes churches in different areas. He'll establish or sets up a church and places or appoints pastors in those churches.

The Apostle then comes back to the churches they established to check on them. Those pastors gets their "orders" from the Apostles in whatever task in that church established.

That's from what I understand what an Apostle does. Paul was an Apostle during his days setting up and establishing churches in different areas of his travels.A young preacher name Timothy was one of the preachers under Paul.
I thought he was talking about being the 'chiefest' of sinners...And its my understanding that an "Apostle" must be qualified to be address in such a way... I mean, church planting doesn't make someone have 'apostololic' abilities.. From what I know, the replacement apostle "Mathias" was added to the number of true apostles after meeting certain qualifications in Acts 1:22ff. Are you saying church planting makes one an "apostle"? Paul also said he is a preacher, evangelist and teacher...His apostolic ability would be the abilitity to pass on miraculous healing power to others...that's what all the original ones could do...And Paul mentions he was the last to see Christ 1 Cor. 15:8. And this is one of the primary qualifications for being an apostle...let alone a 'chief' one from what I understand...help me out please...
nice, real nice................................
That True from my studies as well anthony...and yes, Bishop=Overseerer=Pastor=Elder=Presbyter.
These are all the same office in the original pattern of the church...I've even asked a guy on his personal page who calls himself Chief Apostle...no response..he may think I'm picking, but I'm just honestly trying to get a better understanding of the logic..and the biblical authority... I don't even care about arguing points of controversy to just start something..but this sticks out more than I've ever seen. I've seen a guy in Florida refer to himself as "KING JAMES APOSTLE..." And I'm really taken back by the attempt to create titles...I had a true scholar put me in check as well... I initially referred to myself as "Ministering Evangelist" and he made it clear, biblically, you're either an Evangelist that ministers to planting flocks or minister in the vein of a "preacher" but putting the two together is either redundant, or an attempt to invent a title...So that's why I ask, honestly and geniunely..
The term "Chief Apostle" was first used offically to describe Jesus Christ in the Book of Hebrews, Chapter 3, verse 1, where he is also called the High Priest. It was adopted by the Catholic Church that Peter was the first Chief Apostle of the New Testament Church although the Bible does not specifically say. Chief Apostle reappeared in the 1950's through the New Apostolic Church and has recently become a rather popular title in the African American Church in the 21st century.

The word itself means "one who is sent". It is a relational office between the other 4 ministry gifts. As to its purpose in the 21st Century, is debatable. Most have used the title undefined or have used it in reference to Paul as being a church planter or founder.

As it was introduced, along with the other offices, they were not used as titles before the name, but instead, as a job description. Recognize the following:

No office is capitalized
When a writer made reference to themselves they always used it as a desciptive, not as a Title.

It is assumed that most of this is tradition, handed down through Cathloicism. Hope this helps.

In Him

I looked up Hebrews 3;1 in many different versions...there's not a "Chief" Apostle reference in any translation and I checked over 6. High Priest is utilized..and let's just for arguments sake say it says "Chief Apostle"... but that's talking about JESUS... not any other man.. who then would have the audacity to take on the name of Christ???? I appreciate you giving me to line of logic for this, it seems really presumptionous..
To my family and friends, I'm John... To my Radio Listeners, I'm John Young, To My Kids, I'm dad, To my congregation I'm Pastor None of this is out of mandate, but out of who I have proven myself to be in their lives. The spiritual offices are jobs with great resposibility, and when you do the work, you will be honored for what you do.

The only way I would call someone a baker is if they made me a cake (lol).... Be Blessed
Great discussion family,

I got a lot out of this discussion.

Peace & Blessing!
If there would ever be a chief Apostle, it would be Peter, for it was him that Jesus gave the keys to the kingdom.
Peter was not the only one given the "keys to the Kingdom". That Roman Catholic thought. The Apostles together and whosoever that gained the revelation that Peter had possessed the keys to the Kingdom. JESUS wasn't talking to Peter alone when HE spoke in John 20:21-23, but to the 11 and to anyone else HE places in power and authority.
Christ warns us about 'religous pride' and self elevations.. that's why he was so displeased with the Pharasees & Scribes. Matthew 23:8-12 shows the biblical principle that is quite frankly being violated...
8But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

9And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

10Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

11But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

12And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

I'm not going to beleager the point...I think its been made by the Holy Spirit inspired scriptures themselves. And ignoring the truth does not violate it...
