Dr. Mark Hanby tells an account of a situation that, for me, speaks so well to the issue of not getting snagged into works, but rather in finding positon in life.

Dr. Hanby had a massive mega structure church located at that time in Dallas, Texas, that fell victim to poor structural engineering for the roof. At the time of the building's construction, Dallas was not known to have large amounts of waterfall. As it happened this particular year, there was a diluge. Another church on the other side of town that had used the same structural engineers had a total collapse. When Dr. Hanby arrived at his church, he found it roped off and emergency personnel and engineers acted cautiously to prevent this building the same fate as the other.

Meanwhile, the maintenance man from Dr. Hanby's church was on the roof with a five-gallon bucket working feverishly bailing the water off the roof. This, in reality, had no effect, though he had worked himself to near exhaustion. The engineers finally concluded to drill holes through the roof and out the side walls of the building and place down spouts out of the building. Within 30 to 45 minutes from the time the down spouts were placed and the triggers pulled to release the flow of water through the down spouts, the lake on the roof was dissipated. The building was saved.

The Lord then asked Dr. Hanby, "Did the down spouts work?" Dr. Hanby quickly answered, "Yes!" and upon being asked three times, it became obvious to Dr. Hanby that he was giving the wrong answer. Finally, the Lord revealed to Dr. Hanby that the down spouts did NOT work. They functioned. The down spouts remained at rest while they functioned, and the end result was the saving of the building.

Contrast the maintenance man to the down spouts. While the maintenance man was working with all his strength to the best of his ability and beyond, he never would have accomplished what was needed to rectify the problem, and the building would not have been saved by his works. The end of his labors brought him to near exhaustion, and all of his works were futile. The down spouts, on the other hand, rested continuously, and after effectively completing their function, they were none the less in the area of wear and tear. They merely allowed the flow to go through them.

We must come into a place where we cease from works, and find our position. Position will afford us effectiveness without depleting us mentally, emotionally, physically, financially, and spiritually. The power and love of God can flow through us, and we become a conduit of His power that works exponentially. We become part of the mechanism that channels the flow of power and force, while in actuality, we release none ourselves--it is what flows through us! We are no longer being used up, working ourselves to the bone, and walking away empty because of vain effort. We produce results, and the world is truly changed.
