Transference of Power: How God Used the David and Goliath Battle to Transfer the Kingship

We always focus on the David's defeat of the giant, but I don't think I ever noticed the actual transfer of authority from Saul to David. I always assumed that happened when God dethroned Saul and Samuel subsequently anointed David.

But there is an important principle that is missed if we just look at it from that perspective. God is sovereign but will not normally override man's dominion on the earth. Saul "gave up" his Kingship to David that day. Just as when God wanted to pass the birthright and blessing of Esau to Jacob, to establish the principle of last being first and first being last, he didn't just say "no, you cannot have it." He allowed Esau to follow his own human nature and give up his birthright. Then he allowed Jacob to follow his own human nature and steal the blessing.

1 Corinthians 15:46 says, Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

In the confrontation with Goliath, following his own human nature, Saul gave his "coat" of armor to David, which in the days of old was symbolic of a transfer of authority or respect. The cloak or coat was also symbolic of covenant relationship.

David became King of Israel at that moment though the actual manifestation was not to happen for some time. The transfer that was later seen by all had actually happened that day. At that point, God was able to move into his will for David's life.
