I find that a lot of us play music and sing for lots of different reason. Some play in the church simply because " its my job". Others play because they are a member of the church and what better way to give back to my church and God. Other play because because they just enjoy it. Why do you please please explain why? What's your story?

I play because I love it first I started playing drums then guitar then organ. I'm not going to be hypocritical and just say that I do everything just for the love of it becuse sometimes I get paid."Be real or be still"
I play for my church because thats where God put me! I ran from God a many years before He beat my behind (thru life) back into submission! my mom played piano and even sung with her sisters, "The Kizer sisters"! Needless to say i picked up on that instrument as well as drums and bass. Now i'm a "Minister of Music" at my church and loving it! It just feels right to be doing what God gave me!!! The Holy Spirit taught me err'thing i know!!!
The reason I play for my church is to assist with the vision of the pastor
to help build the kingdom, to win souls in the kingdom,to edify build the saints
for working for the lord....to help bring them in to a place of worship and praise
before our God....
I play for my church because it is something that I have to do. I feel that God gave me the ability to play and intepret music and I have not given it back as I should. I have played before thousands(live) and so many times for smaller groups. You might remember the Roger Trottman and Zapp song "I can make you dance if I want you to." Well that is me.. Not braggiing but I can. The problem is that I was using my gifts for the betterment of anybody. In fact I may have been keeping them from what and where they should have been.
Drums, Harmonica, Bass Guitar, lead guitar an some piano and violin. (90% of the time I was playing to entertain and not inspire.). If my feeble efforts can have that effect on people. I know now that I should
and should have been using music to draw people closer to God. And when I started to try and play to draw people to God. Guess what, The devil in the churches did'nt want me to play.
It was almost as if they were afraid to let me play. Sometimes it was greed. They though if I played their pay might be reduced. Sometimes it was just envy. But all of the time it was satan.
But thank God for one person, Deacon Mark Hardy, who said to me "Oh yeah, so you play, come to practice on Thursday @ 7:00 come out and let's see how it goes." and I've been playing at that church ever since.
Most of the time It does'nt take but 1 good person of God. Then all of the old guys wanted me to come back and play with them, the same guys who try to cheat you on the cut when you performed, steal cables, and so on.
The most dramatic thing that happened was I was refusing to play at a club after they kept pressuring me saying, "Oh, this place is alright, It not smoky, and they don't keep up a lot of stuff there." Well the night they wanted me to play A man beat a woman up and set her on fire in the parking lot. Now tell me that place was alright. It let me know that places like that are all the same. Places are either in a sinning state or a saving state. So you know where to find me.
And I don't think they'll put me out at Liberal Trinity Church of God in Christ in Jackson MS, because at this church they are willing to praise God. So if you're in a dead church, Come on out of that corner and go where you'll hear somebody say Hallelujah!! and Amen!! and mean it.
I play because of a two-fold reason, just to be honest. The first is because I love God music. I didn't say Gospel, Christian, church music because I believe that no one title truly encompasses the melodies God hears from His people. The second reason is because my Pastor used to pull double-duty: preaching and playing. As a 13 year old, I used to watch my father played the drums, and it was one Sunday after church that I literally sat down on the church set and mimicked my dad. I remember my dad, my uncle (the organist), and the Pastor stopping their conversation and looking at me. I thought I had done something wrong as I looked back and said, "What did I do!? I'm sorry!!" They all replied "No....keep playing!!" That was my humble beginning.

17 years later, I now find myself doing double-duty, musically that is. Now I primarily play the organ, with a little bit of drums whenever my present pastor decides to hop back on the organ. I will admit that it is tedious, as I tend to play more than preach or teach. It has been this way for the bettter part of my adult life, and it has frustrated me numerous times. Prophetic words have come forth both musically and ministry wise, but I still find myself playing. If you ask me, I would rather hone in on my preaching ministry but I am understanding that this season calls for me to play music. I was never concerned with compensation, as I always played for passion. Do not get me wrong, for I believe that a servant is worthy of his hire, but I have witnessed first hand how greed has swallowed up some of the greatest musicians. I asked God to never allow me to be trapped by that facet of musicianship. I have been fortunate to learn both instruments by ear and by the gift of YouTube (Lol). I am just praying that my average skill level on both instruments is pleasing in the presence of God.
Hey Pastor Lee,
If I were to write a song about it would sound like this:

I play because I'm happy. I play because I'm free.
The church appreciates my labor and that's why they compensate me.
Oh, His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

There are many reasons why musicians play for churches.
I don't believe that there is a wrong or right answer.
If the person is yoked to a ministry that shares the same belief system;
much can be accomplished in music and ministry.

The problems that we most often hear about or even write about,
are ministries and methods that unequally yoked.

People who do not wish to be financially compensated
need to find ministries where the beliefs only include volunteers.

People who wish to be financially compensated
need to find ministries where the beliefs include finances or a budget.

We should all love what we do and be dedicated to our local churches.
I know many seasoned musicians who feel the same way that I do.
I encourage everyone to find they're practical place and perspective purpose;
and then prosper in whatever they're doing, even as their soul prospers in the Lord.

Thanks
I lead worship because when I enter into His presence with singing some others choose to join me. Then it pleases my bridegroom Jesus to love on him with song!
I find worship is one of the most enjoyable and powerful parts of my life. When I lead worship each Sunday morning I just tell the people... I am going into the presence of God.. you can come with me. Isn't this our highest calling to enjoy and release His presence. "In His presence is fullness of joy and pleasures for evermore." Maybe the real pleasure channel is our worship service each Sunday morning and God comes down and visits us! Why give Satan any credit for false pleasure! Interesting God promotes true pleasure! He knows we were designed for His pleasure! God bless you. By the way you must practice the presence of God in your life if you are going to lead others there. Can't take them where you have not gone.
