Rev. Timothy Wright: Update On Gospel Singer's Recovery Posted Mar 25th 2009 1:23PM by Jawn Murray Filed under: BV Buzz, Gospel , Entertainment By Jawn Murray, BlackVoices.com Grammy-nominated gospel singer and New York pastor Rev. Timothy Wright is still facing significant health struggles following the car crash that killed his wife, Betty Wright, 58, and grandson, D.J. Wright, 14, in July of 2008.
On Jan. 17, 2009 during the taping of the Stellar Awards in Nashville, Wright's sons accepted an award on behalf of their father and announced to the audience that the renowned reverend had a major medical setback the day of the show.
Various rumors about the 61-year-old minister's health circulated over the last two months, most recently that the 'Come Though Almighty King' was brain dead and wasn't expected to live much longer.
Now the family of the famed gospel icon has released a statement updating the Christian community on the condition of Wright, whose prognosis has progressed in recent days.
"Rev. Wright did not have a heart attack. But on Jan. 21 his heart stopped suddenly. He was on life support for two to three weeks, but as of right now he's off life support. He is breathing on his own. He's not 100 percent responsive but he does open his eyes when we talk to him. He's not brain dead but the lack of oxygen to his brain while his heart was stopped has caused his response to be very slow. So we're praying that his response picks up and he returns back to normal. The doctors didn't give us a time table but God will do it on his own time," the statement said, before reminding: "Keep Rev. in your prayers!"
