I do emphathize with your dilemma. When I was considering seminary, I did not see how in the world it was going to work, especially trying to support a home on a part-time salary. But God is faithful and provided the means.

I would definitely recommend speaking with Dr. Woodson. There's also folks in admissions that are helpful. Sharifa Hayle Stevens is one in particular I would recommend speaking with. There are scholarships available, although the ones I get are for American-born African American students. I think there are ones available for foreign born students. I also use the Stafford Loan program to pay for a portion (probably averaging about 30% so far). I myself need to start looking for more free money to reduce or eliminate the need for the loan. However, we would not hesitate to borrow for a car or a home. How much more valuable is a seminary education.

There are some students who work full-time and go part-time. Although, I do know personally of at least 3 who work full-time plus take a full-load. I have heard of others, too. It can be done and something more doable if you're single. I work part-time but my job requires me to think alot so sometimes it does get a bit much with school.

So pray YES and definitely make a visit and speak with people. Hope that is somewhat helpful.

You know, I hope I did not come off as too ungracious in my last comment. Some things do get under my skin but in all I want to be fair and extend grace, especially considering the amount of grace that has been extended to me. With that said, a good friend of mine says there are 3 reasons folks do things in way that is not consistent with the witness of Scripture - ignorance, indifference or obstinance. I agree with this. It is one thing to not know any better, yet another to not really care. But it is really egregious when we are presented with evidence, and choose to do it our way. In the end, only God knows the heart and why we do what we do.

I personally believe that many don't understand the significance of divine order and why the Biblical prescription is male headship. That absolutely does not mean women have no place in leadership and cannot provide a significant influence. When God said it is not good for man to be alone, I think that has a broader application to humanity and especially in the life of the church. Contributions are needed on both sides. But the question comes under whose authority are we submitted. If God's, then we follow suit with His order. Or at least that's the way I see it.

Anthony, I can only imagine the amount of grace extended on your part for enduring, did you say 3 hours ? of what you described. It seems to me, that female usurption of authority might have been the least of issues. I think God's authority, period, might have been in question. Its what happens when there is not a high view of Scripture in play or its necessity understood. Not to mention, the NT prescription for church leadership. PLUS, who today has seen Jesus?

The picture you have painted sadly reminds me that 'our' biggest problem is putting style over substance. We have used the gospel and Scripture as a springboard for activities rather than the guide. It becomes ok if things are done a certain way, which eventually end up in self-promotion. It reminds me of the necessity of constant preaching of the gospel to remind us who we are in relation to Him. It should cause us to approach our activities with as much grace and humility as possible, being ever so mindful to keep Christ center and ourselves bowed.

This is why my heart's passion is teaching as many people as possible the Bible - what it is, how we got it, and how to understand it. We have such a subjective and experiential approach to Scripture, and don't understand the significance of understanding things in their proper context. But anyways, enough of my railing.

To be honest, I am not 100% convinced of where I stand regarding women preachers. I absolutely do not believe that women can have authority in the governing body of the local assembly, meaning senior pastor or elder. I believe that is the issue behind 1 Timothy 2:12, not that women cannot speak but cannot exercise authority in church leadership. The question becomes if one preaches, is one exercising authority. Some say yes, some say no. I lean towards believing it is ok for women to preach, or even to hold positions on pastoral staff as long as it is not part of the governing body. But I also want to make sure that whatever position I take is because I'm being intellectually honest with the Biblical text and not moved by my desires aka flesh.

How is your job search going? Any chance you followed up with Dr. Woodson? Just wondering.

Well, it is good to hear from you. Stay in touch.

Yes Anthony (or do you prefer Tony?), I agree we must keep in touch. So you were there yesterday? I was actually in the rec room at Washington Towers, which is the Singles apt complex right across the street from the library. Next time you're going to be on campus, let me know. I'm one of the odd birds that actually likes books and learning, so I try to be on campus as much as possible and also to interact with people. I actually go there sometimes to do work as well.

What kind of work were you doing? I write and manage grants for a faith-based social service agency close to campus. The Lord has blessed me to stay in my professional field part-time, which is a pretty decent part-time gig for school. I'm always getting some kind of notice about positions opened in the non-profit sector.

And I understand your frustrations about under-utilization. Take heart. I am constantly reminded that God would not give us gifts without superintending the process to use them. And this is coming from a person who has experienced some pretty significant directional shifts. Although I suspect that after 20 years in ministry, this is something you know full well. As one of my classmates reminded me last week of something different, others may not see but God sees. He's workin it out ;)

If you are on Facebook, look me up.

Anthony, that's good to know and I should be the one going 'whew'. I thought I was the only one around here- whew...lol. Yeah, I think a lot of it does hinge on the book of Acts. At some point, I plan on taking the greek exegesis class on the book of Acts. Darrel Bock has a fantastic commentary on it as well. No matter how many times I read it, I always find something new. God's word is so amazing that way.

You might want to check out this site too, www.theologica.ning.com. It's a theology and Biblical discussion site that I spend my spare time on. Usually some good discussions and great folks to virtually hang out with.

Anthony, I had to look up Gwen in the picture directory. I believe I have seen her around although I don't know her personally. It's interesting you say that about furthering Biblical education. I sometimes think God closes doors so He can open others. Don't knock the learning as too academic. It's about learning in community that I have found strengthens faith, not detracts from it. We are but finite beings trying to wrap our puny heads around an infinite God. We can't exhaust learning nor ever attain to a complete knowledge of Him. But I do believe that what He has revealed, is meant for us to understand. So why not strive as best as possible to understand it, especially when it comes to communicating that to others. I personally think that shows humility before God.

Yes, please do contact Dr. Woodson and mention me. He's real good folk.

Hello, I'm wondering if you are still at Bethel Bible Church. I know Dr. Woodson as he is the adviser to African-American students at Dallas Seminary, where I am also a student. He can be a really good resource for you as you prayerfully navigate through ministry. Just a thought.
