God has commanded us to preach all of His Word and to "reprove, rebuke, exhort" (2 Timothy 4:2).  This is the preacher's divine standard.  God has commanded us not only to believe sound doctrine, but also to earnestly contend for it (Jude 3).  That means we are to fight agrressively against that which is false.  This is exactly what we see in the uncompromising ministry of the Lord's Apostles.  Their epistles contain strong and clear warnings about false teaching.  Paul often named the names of the false teachers.  Such a ministry naturally causes divisions between those who are committed to the truth and those who are following error.  Paul made no effort whatsoever to avoid doctrinal controversy.  The Holy Spirit warned that "evil men and seducers shalll wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived" (2 Timothy 3:13).

Hello there Cassandra,

I am not much of a sermon writer but I will try to help.

In Luke 23:46 Jesus totally committed Himself to His Father's will by literally dying to self on the cross. The passage Phil 2:3-11 talks about Jesus' servanthood and the last verses in that passage show the reward He received for His obedience.

Jesus died physically but God wants us to spiritually die to self as spoken about in Rom. 6:1-8 and to be living sacrifices as Rom. 12:1-2 tell us.

To me, a committment to God is one in which we deny ourselves all things as Luk 9:23 says, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me." We must turn away from all sin and be the servant of all (Matt 23:11) and love God and our neighbour will all our heart, mind, soul and strength as it says in Mark 12:29-30.

Hope that is of some help.

God bless,

Mick
