LEO CASINO - playing music in Miami Beach & Miami since the 60's

LEO CASINO - from Pittsburg to Miami, Miami Beach, Overtown - and a visit with Manuel Noriega.

Sax player Leo has been playing on the Beach since 60’s and had some stories to tell. Leo comments, "I have played on Miami Beach since the days when Elvis, Wayne Cochran and so many other great musicians worked Collins and Ocean drive. Played at the Newport, Mangos, Living room, Jazid, Castaways and so many others. I now play at Mynt and numerous hotels, clubs and other venues on the beach.I am probably the longest running musician still performing on the beach since the 1960's.

Leo has great credentials. He is a Grammy-nominated composer and sax artist, who has recorded 100+ songs, scored/acted in 18 movies and has appeared on the Geraldo, Maury Povitch, and Today Shows. He recently performed at the Memphis Jazz Festival, Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival and numerous festivals and concerts around the globe.

Also Leo has performed with many greats including George Benson, Earth, Wind & Fire, Neil Diamond, Jimi Hendrix, Donny Hathaway, Peter Tosh, Neville Brothers, Miles Jaye, Bob Marley, Gloria Gaynor, Robert Flack, Lionel Richie, Grace Jones, Meat Loaf and Jaco Pastorius—to name just a few. Casino is adept on alto, soprano and tenor sax. He is also an accomplished dancer, singer, composer and bandleader.

Leo in South Beach
When Leo first arrived in Miami in 1965, however, things were not so grand. At 15 years old, he arrived from Pittsburg, a member of an 11-piece band. They played all over the area, in Miami, the Beach, Overtown. In those days when segregation was still the norm in Miami, Black bands were offered a “contract” whereby the band would get rail transportation to Miami, a one-bedroom apartment on 7th Avenue in Overtown (for all the players), and $1 per diem per person.

Leo remembers that all Blacks were supposed to get a work card to be on Miami Beach. “I refused,” he stated, “If I had a dollar for every time some cop stopped me coming to the Beach and then would escort me to the bridge and send me away, I would be wealthy today.” Leo said that band would just turn around and try again, through another route, the 79th Street Causeway or something.

On the Beach, says Leo, 90% of the chauffeurs and maids used to be Black. Some of the chauffeurs had great stories to tell about passengers such as Frank Sinatra and Madonna. One cabbie took Mother Teresa all over to Liberty City, Opa-Locka, Overtown -- to crack houses etc. -- until 2-3 in the morning. “She was fearless.” Leo also remembers how various places on the Beach, even within the last 10-12 years, have tried to restrict or hinder Blacks from coming in -- several boycotts and lawsuits, related to discrimination, originated in Miami Beach (think Thai Tony and Denny’s).

Leo likes to tell the good stuff, along with the bad, about Miami. “When I first came down here, even up 'til now, being in Miami has opened me up to so many different cultures. I even worked with Jewish musicians who had numbers on their arms from concentration camps.” (He tells the story of one sax player who got caught twice by the Germans, once in Germany and later in France. This guy made it through the camps by carving wooden chess sets for the guards.) “I would play for Bris celebrations, Bar Mitzvahs, Bas Mitzvahs. It gave me a chance to meet new people, to break misconceptions.”

Lionel Richie and Leo
“In the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s,” comments Leo, “there was a lot of independent theater work in Miami Beach. Somebody would get an idea, write it and find a location. The artists had a community.” Leo wrote several productions, including one about Nelson Mandela and another about Miami Beach, called “East of Overtown.” At the Cameo Theater in South Beach, Leo starred as General Noriega in a production that he had conceptualized, called “I am Innocent: General Noriega.” This production evolved from a short letter that Leo sent to Noriega, asking him for his side of the story after the U.S. invaded Panama. Noriega replied, the New Times did an article, and Noriega’s lawyer Frank Rubino was in touch with Leo.

There was even some talk with Oliver Stone about doing a movie, but when that didn’t come to fruition, Leo decided to do a musical theater production in collaboration with the ART-ACT theater group. At the performance, Noriega’s wife, daughter and lawyer were in the audience, along with Janet Reno, and some government agents and elected officials. Since Noriega was famous for his machete, Leo waved one around in the air too.

Along the way, Leo has met, worked with, and mentored many famous performers (see his website http://www.leocasino.us/intro.html). He gives a special thanks to those people who have helped him along his journey. Leo comments, “At a young age, my father abandoned me. So I say that I don’t have one father. I have had 100 fathers, all older musicians and friends, both in Pittsburg and here in Miami.”
