This lesson examined work that members need to do in the local church. But in order for the church to succeed, proper work must be accompanied by proper attitudes. Here are some attitudes that all Christians need in order to maintain proper relationships in the local church.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I. Members Need to Love God and One Another.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

God Requires Us to Love.
>>> Please read Matthew 22:37-40. <<<

*1,2* The greatest two commands require love for whom? Answer: The commands require love first for __________ and second for your __________.

>>> Please read 1 Corinthians 13:1-3. <<<

*3* How important is love? (a) love is unnecessary, (b) good works must be motivated by love, (c) God does not care, (d) all of the preceding. Answer: __________.

>>> Please read John 13:34,35. <<<

*4* How can we understand the kind of love we should show? Answer: We should love one another like __________ loved us.

If we do not love our brothers, then we cannot properly love our Father in heaven (1 John 4:19-21; 1 Thess. 3:12; 4:9,10; 2 Thess. 1:3).

Love Requires Us to Obey God and Help Others.
>>> Please read 1 John 3:16-18. <<<

*5* How did Jesus show His love for us? Answer: Jesus showed His love by __________.

>>> Please read John 14:15,21-24; 1 John 5:2,3. <<<

*6* To truly love God and other people, what must one do? Answer: Proper love requires us to __________ God's (Jesus') commands.

Think: Is God pleased by a sweet disposition without obedience? Is He pleased by outward conduct without proper motives?

Too many congregations are filled with people who lack sincere love for one another or who fail to show love in their actions. Furthermore, love is the basis of all proper obedience. The other attitudes and practices we will study must grow out of love.

Do you sincerely love all your brethren? Does love show in what you do as well as in your speech? If every Christian loved like you do, would God be pleased or displeased? Do you love as Jesus loved?

[John 15:12-17; Eph. 5:2; Phil. 2:2,3; Heb. 13:1; 1 Peter 1:22; 2:17]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

II. Members Must Be Committed to Truth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many churches suffer because members fail to pursue truth.

Members Must Love the Truth.
>>> Please read John 8:31-34; 1 Peter 1:22,23. <<<

*7,8* What can truth do for us? Answer: Truth can make us __________; obeying it can purify our __________.

>>> Please read 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12. <<<

*9* What will happen to those who do not love truth? Answer: Those who do not love truth will not be saved but will believe a lie and __________.

No matter how often you hear truth preached, if you do not love it enough, sooner or later you will believe error and be lost.

[1 Cor. 13:6; James 1:18; Prov. 23:23; John 3:19-21]

Members Must Learn and Believe Truth.
Truth is found in God's word (John 17:17), but that will do us no good unless we put forth the effort to learn and accept it.

>>> Please read John 8:32; Psalm 25:4,5. <<<

*10* What must we do so truth can free us from sin? Answer: We must __________ the truth, so it can set us free.

>>> Please read Proverbs 2:1-6. <<<

*11* How should we search for understanding? Answer: Search for it like we are searching for __________.

Think: If we really value truth like we value treasure, would we think about it only one hour a week? Does a person love truth when he has no desire to study it every day? Shouldn't we want to attend every opportunity the church provides for us to learn?

Local churches are successful only when the members are truly committed to studying and attending when they can.

[Prov. 8:7-11,17; Acts 17:11; Psa. 86:11; 1 Tim. 2:3,4; Eph. 1:13]

Members Must Obey the Truth.
Knowledge is of little benefit unless we act on it.

>>> Please read 1 Peter 1:22,23; Psalm 19:7-11. <<<

*12* According to the passages, how do we benefit from God's word? (a) just read it, (b) just talk about it, (c) just tell others about it, (d) keep and obey it. Answer: __________.

>>> Please read Romans 2:6-11. <<<

*13* What happens if we do not obey truth? Answer: Those who don't obey will receive __________.

God never promises the benefits of truth to those who do not obey it. Too many congregations have members who continue to disobey truth, yet they do not seem to realize their error. These folks need to learn the importance of commitment to truth.

Churches need members who love the truth enough to obey it.

[John 8:31; 2 John 4; 3 John 3,4; Gal. 5:7; Psa. 26:3; 86:11; John 4:24; 3:19-21; James 5:19,20; 1:18-25; Matt. 7:21-27; Heb. 10:26-31]

Members Must Oppose Error.
Most members have difficulty speaking out against sin. Some people say it is "unloving" to do so. Yet truth and error are opposites. You cannot love one without hating the other.

>>> Please read Hebrews 1:9; Romans 12:9. <<<

*14,15* How should we view right and wrong? Answer: We should __________ evil and __________ righteousness.

Think: Is it possible to really love truth without hating error?

>>> Please read Revelation 3:19; 2 Timothy 4:2-4. <<<

*16* What should be done when people turn from truth to error? Answer: As an act of love, we should __________ people who go into error.

Think: How can rebuking sin be an act of love? What does it mean to "hate the sin, but love the sinner"?

We should not rebuke people from a spirit of pride, vengeance, or self-will. But if we truly love people who are in sin, we will rebuke them.

Too many congregations have been overrun by error because members did not oppose it. The only congregation that will remain faithful before God is one where the members will speak out for what is true and oppose error with sincere love for the souls of all.

Is spiritual truth more valuable to you than material possessions? Do you study diligently and attend church meetings to learn God's word? Are you willing to change your conduct to live according to truth no matter how great the sacrifice that is required?

[Amos 5:15; Psalms 119:104,127,128; 1 Tim. 1:3-7; Lev. 19:17,18; John 7:7; James 5:19,20; Gal. 6:1,2; 1 Thess. 5:14; Eph. 5:11]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

III. Members Must Be Committed to Serve.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Too often people believe that, even if they do not work, they should be treated the same as folks who do work. As a result, many congregations are hindered by negligent members. Instead of "every part doing its share," relatively few members end up doing most of the work.

>>> Please read Matthew 20:26-28. <<<

*17* What is the true basis of greatness in life? Answer: Those who are great are those who __________.

Think: Is greatness determined by wealth, power, or talent?

>>> Please read 1 Corinthians 15:58. <<<

*18* How does God describe the way we ought to work? (a) steadfast, (b) unmovable, (c) abounding, (d) not vain, (e) all the preceding. Answer: __________.

Think: Is God satisfied when folks do a little work or work sporadically and intermittently?

>>> Please read Galatians 6:2. <<<

*19* What should Christians do for one another? Answer: We should bear one another's __________.

Note that the attitudes we previously studied also show the importance of service. If we appreciate the importance of loving God and others, if we are committed to the truth, if we want to be truly great, and if we want to be saved eternally, then we must appreciate the value of serving others. Service is essential to all these other things.

Would Jesus say that you are steadfast, always abounding in His work? Do you actively seek ways to be more involved in the work of the church, or do you seek to avoid work? If every member was just as active and involved in the work of the church as you are, how much work would be accomplished?

[Acts 10:35; Gal. 5:6,13,14; Titus 2:11-14; Luke 10:25-37; Neh. 4:6; Ecc. 9:10; James 2:14-26; 2 Thess 1:8,9; Rom. 6:17,18; Matt. 7:21]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IV. Members Must Be Patient & Forbearing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many members act properly when they have no problems, but they fail to act properly when things do not go their way, or when they are not treated well. Other people are good at starting projects but not so good at finishing what they start. We need patience and forbearance.

Patience is endurance, persistence, perseverance, longsuffering, steadfastness. It is the quality of a person who, having begun in the right direction, continues on in spite of all difficulties.

Members Must Patiently Face Hardship.
>>> Please read Luke 8:11-15. <<<

*20* How did good soil differ from other soils? Answer: The good soil describes people who bear fruit with __________.

>>> Please read Hebrews 10:32-36; 12:1-4. <<<

*21* What do we need when we suffer? (a) patience and endurance, (b) a large bankroll, (c) an influential family, (d) a good education. Answer: __________.

Too many members blow hot and cold. They begin good works (studying, attending, etc.), but they become discouraged and give up when they face problems and opposition. Local churches need members who keep working no matter how difficult the challenge.

[James 5:7,8; 1:12; 1 Cor. 13:4,7; 1 Pet. 2:19-23; Gal. 5:22; 2 Pet. 1:6]

We need patience when teaching sinners.
>>> Please read 2 Timothy 4:2-4; 2:24-26. <<<

*22* We need patience (longsuffering) to do what? (a) accumulate wealth, (b) become a famous actor, (c) teach others, (d) win an election. Answer: __________.

>>> Please read 1 Thessalonians 5:14. <<<

*23* With whom should we be patient in our teaching? Answer: We should be patient with (longsuffering toward) __________.

Some people become discouraged when they don't see immediate results to their work, when people criticize them, or when converts go back to the world. God has warned us that some will not want the truth, but we must still teach. Local churches need members who patiently lead sinners to the truth.

Note that the above verses specifically deal with teaching other Christians who sin. Sometimes these cases require the greatest patience. [Gal. 6:1; Matt. 18:15-17; 5:23,24; Luke 17:3,4; 1 Cor. 5; 2 Thess. 3:6,14,15; Titus 3:10,11; Rom. 16:17,18]

Do you continue patiently serving God, or have you allowed problems to cause you to give up doing what you know is right? Do you seek to be reconciled to people in the church from whom you have become alienated? Do you honor the Bible plan for church discipline? Do you bear temptation and hardship like Jesus did?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

V. Members Must Be Committed to Unity and Peace.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Throughout the world local churches have been destroyed by division and strife. Christians who once worked side-by-side can no longer even worship together. This is tragic.

Members Must Work For Peace and Unity.
>>> Please read John 17:20,21. <<<

*24* For what did Jesus pray? Answer: He prayed we would all be __________ as He and His Father are.

>>> Please read Romans 15:5,6; 1 Peter 3:8. <<<

*25* How united should we be? (a) like-minded toward one another, (b) one mind, (c) glorifying God with one mouth, (d) all of these. Answer: __________.

Think: How many people does it take to destroy the unity and peace of the local church? How many people must work for unity?

Notice now how all the other attitudes we have studied will help promote peace and unity in a congregation.

Love Promotes Peace and Unity.
Love leads us to treat our brethren right.

>>> Please read Philippians 2:2-5. <<<

*26* Love is here associated with what? (a) like minds, (b) one accord, (c) looking for the interests of others, (d) all of the preceding. Answer: __________.

Think: Can unity exist where members always want their own way and pursue their own interests?

Few things destroy unity in a local church faster than selfishness. Local churches need members who will seek the wellbeing of other members, sacrificing their own desires to help others. [1 Cor. 1:10-13,31]

Commitment to Truth Promotes Peace and Unity.
We have already learned that all members must follow God's will instead of human doctrine. Such a commitment to truth helps maintain unity by keeping the church pure and avoiding doctrinal error.

>>> Please read Ephesians 4:2-6. <<<

*27,28* How many bodies and how many faiths are necessary to unity? Answer: We must have __________ body and __________ faith.

Think: When members depart from the "one faith" and persist in unscriptural practices, does this promote peace and unity? In such cases, who stands guilty before God when division comes?

God's plan for unity is not a plan for doctrinal compromise. In areas of personal preferences and opinions, we must compromise for the good of the group. But when people leave the truth to practice sin, they must be taught to repent. If they will not, the only way the church can return to unity in truth is to withdraw from them (Rom. 16:17,18; Titus 3:10,11; 2 Thess. 3:6,14,15).

True wisdom is "first pure, then peaceable" (James 3:17). Local churches need members who seek unity based on truth.

Service to Others Promotes Peace and Unity.
Commitment to service leads every member to do his/her share in the congregation.

>>> Please read 1 Corinthians 12:17-25. <<<

*29* If every member of the body fulfills its function and every member cares for other members, what problem can we avoid (v25)? Answer: When all members work together, we avoid ___________.

Think: When members neglect their work and leave it for other members to do, does this promote peace and unity in a congregation?

The local church needs members who work diligently to please the Lord and serve one another. If all will cooperate and work together, then we also have the unity God wants. [Rom. 12:3-8]

Patience Promotes Peace and Unity.
Patience with other members helps a congregation overcome problems and maintain good relationships.

>>> Please read Ephesians 4:2,3. <<<

*30* Unity (v3) is associated with what qualities? (a) humility, (b) longsuffering, (c) bearing with one another, (d) all the preceding. Answer: __________.

When we are irritated by personalities or opinions of brethren who are not guilty of sin, patience will help us forbear and maintain peace. When brethren are guilty of sin, patience will help us restore them.

Do you appreciate all members for the work they do, when they work according to their ability? Are you willing to sacrifice your personal desires and preferences in order to maintain unity? If all members of the congregation shared your attitude, would the congregation have the peace and unity that Jesus desires?

In order for the church to accomplish the work God has assigned, every member must work diligently and maintain proper attitudes.

Personal application questions:
(These questions are for you to ponder. Your answers will help us understand your thinking, however they will not affect your "score.")

*31* Do you need to improve your love for other Christians? ________

*32* How important is it to you to speak out against sin? __________

*33* Do you look for ways to be more involved in the church? _______

*34* Do you continue the good works you start, or do you quit? ______

*35* Do you sacrifice personal desires in order to be peaceable? ______God Only Wants You To Trust Himtag:abcpreachers.ning.com,2009-07-21:916966:BlogPost:8802752009-07-21T21:47:22.000ZTamika Phai Millshttp://abcpreachers.ning.com/profile/walkingintomydestiny

It’s a wonderful day to be a child of God. Have you ever experienced a time in your life when everything became overwhelming? No matter what you did or how you did it, weariness consumed your body.
It’s a wonderful day to be a child of God. Have you ever experienced a time in your life when everything became overwhelming? No matter what you did or how you did it, weariness consumed your body. No matter how much work you delegated, there was still much work to complete. No matter how many times friends and family told you to take a vacation, you could not see how and when it would be possible. Have you ever found yourself drowning in the sorrows of yesterday, concerned about today and worried about tomorrow? Because of past mistakes and shortcomings, now you worry about everything backfiring in your life. You desire to move forward but the enemy continues to remind you of your sins. Have you ever thought about throwing in the towel? Just when you thought things were looking better, something unforeseen took place.

Today, I have been commissioned to come and minister directly to you. You are the person God designed today’s devotional for. He placed you on my mind. Just When Quitting Crossed Your Mind … How often do you feel this way? How often do you contemplate quitting? How often do you ponder walking away from ministry? How often do you dread things as usual? My friend, God is well aware of your weary times. He notices the times you cry and no one appears to notice. He notices the nights you walked the floor in doubt and worry. He noticed the times you tried to stretch finances because every bill was due at the same time. He knows you want to give up. He knows you want to walk away from everything and everyone. The Bible declares in Galatians 6:9 - And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Are you aware that there is a specific season when that bad thing will turn in your life (Romans 8:28)? I cannot tell you when, but I can tell you God is in charge.

Just When Quitting Crossed Your Mind … Your current situation is not greater than your God. The doctor’s diagnosis is not the final word. The bill collector’s phone calls are not the end. The bank statement is not completely accurate. You are blessed beyond material and monetary means. You serve a God who specializes in the impossible. The Bible declares in Matthew 11:29 - Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Many times the weariness we experience is due to our inability to fully surrender. As long as you think it can be handled by your hands, you will continue to endure. It is when you release the matter into the hands of God that you understand how awesome God really can be for you. Beloved, the next time quitting crosses your mind, remind yourself and your enemy that God is in control. Prayer for Today: Father, I have thought about quitting before. It really has crossed my mind. But today I understand You have never lost a case or a battle. Handle this (place your in here) for me. In Jesus’ name … Amen!Letter From Hell!!tag:abcpreachers.ning.com,2009-07-16:916966:BlogPost:8715822009-07-16T00:30:00.000ZTamika Phai Millshttp://abcpreachers.ning.com/profile/walkingintomydestiny

Louise, in her dream,…
One evening Louise fell asleep and had a very fitful dream.
She dreamed that someone in Hell wrote a letter to her; it was
to be hand-delivered. The Messenger passed between the
lakes of burning fire and brimstone that occupy Hell, and
found his way to the door leading to the outside world.

Louise dreamed that the Messenger walked to her house, came
inside, and gently but firmly woke her up. He handed her the
message, saying only that a friend had wrote her from Hell.

Louise, in her dream, with trembling hands took the letter and
read;

My friend, I stand in judgement now,
And feel that you’ re to blame somehow.
On earth, I walked with you day by day,
And never did you point the way.

You knew the Lord in Truth and Glory,
But never did you tell the story.
My knowledge then was very dim;
You could have led me safe to Him.

Though we lived together on the earth,
You never told me of The second Birth,
and now I stand this day condemned,
Because you failed to mention Him.

You taught me many things, that’s true,
I called you “Friend” and trusted you,
But I learn now that it’s too late,
You could have kept me from this fate.

We walked by day and talked by night,
And yet you showed me not the Light.
You let me live, and love, and die,
You knew I’ d never live on high.

Yes, I called you a “Friend” in life,
And trusted you through joy and strife.
And yet on coming to the end,
I cannot, now, call you “My Friend”.

From Marsha

After reading the letter, Louise awoke. The dream was so real
in her mind and sweat dripped from her body in pools. She
could still smell the acrid smell of brimstone and smoke in the
room. As she con-templated
The meaning of her dream, she realized that she had failed in
her duty to “go out to all the world and preach the Gospel.” As
she thought of that, she promised herself that the next day, she
would call Marsha and Invite her to church.

The next morning she called Marsha. Marsha’ s husband
Billanswered the phone…….

“Yes, Bill, Is Marsha there? ”

“Louise, you don’ t know?”

“No, Bill, know what?”

“Marsha died last night in a car accident.”

Are you sharing your faith with your friends that you are with
everyday? Will you have friends or family members in Hell,
asking why you did not tell them about Jesus? How many can
hold you accountable for not telling them about Jesus and His
Are pastors, politicians, world leaders, and everyone else, responsible for promises made? What about honesty and integrity, is there a double standard? How do you feel when someone makes a promise to you and doesn't keep their word or makes excuses to get out of it? If a "vow" is not faithfully honored then how can the person ever be trusted? Is keeping one's word really important and will God hold people accountable for what they promise? How can people believe a person who doesn't…
How can people believe a person who doesn't keep their promised word? What does God think when people make up excuses in order to get out of keeping their word?

God spoke the world into existence and promised to save us from our sins by sending us His son to die on the cross. If we repent asking Jesus to come into our heart, God will keep His word to save us! God keeps His word, does He expect us to keep ours? Does God hear every word said and every promise made? Will He hold Pastors, Politicians, and World leaders more accountable than the rest of the world for what they speak and promise to do? Why?

Keeping promises demonstrates our “True Inner Self.” It shows whether or not we have corruptible or incorruptible morals (fruitful seed) inside of us. Integrity, Honor, Self-respect and Honesty means everything to man and to the Lord! What kind of Christian walk does the Lord desire us to have? Is keeping one's word really important or do we have the right to alter and change it? Does the world respect people who break their promises? A broken promise means a broken trust and relationship. Trust and respect as well as one's honor is the basis of our relationship with our Lord. He expects us to keep our word, (vow, oath) to others as well!

God doesn't accept the altering promises!
Lev 27:9-10 And if it be a beast, whereof men bring an offering unto the LORD, all that any man giveth of such unto the LORD shall be holy. He shall not alter it, nor change it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good
When you give your word to someone you are also giving it unto the Lord. The Lord teaches us in the Bible that we must not go back on our promises even if we have to pay a higher price to keep them. Our promises are taken seriously and we will be held accountable for them. Changing our minds is not acceptable to the Lord!

Pastors as keepers of the flock must have a high standard of morals because they answer directly to God. A Pillar of society! I Timothy 3:14-15 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
The church congregation belongs to the Lord and the responsibility of them is a serious matter. Pastors must be blameless and morally pure. Promises must be taken seriously! God holds them accountable because where Pastors lead the flock (congregation) will follow. To be like Jesus is to keep your promise!

A man shall NOT break his word.. The Bible says Numbers 30:2 If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth. Moses being directed of God told people that they must keep their promises. A person's word in just the same as a written legal contract in the eyes of God. People who by their own free will have given a vow to do something must keep their word! Only a child's broken promises can be overruled by a parent, but even then correction must be made by the parent to teach the child about keeping one's word. Numbers 30: 3-8

The importance of keeping one's word is a matter of Integrity!
Psalms 25:20-21 O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.
Integrity and righteousness are the two most important things for a Christian to have. Uprightness and Integrity demonstrate what we believe, and how consistent of a walk we have with Jesus. Pray to the Lord to help you keep your promises and strive to be pure before the Lord. A man has real dignity of character when he has high integrity!

A broken promise is a sin and will be judged by the Lord. God punishes the wicked!
Leviticus 5:4-5 Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these. And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing: God requires Christians to keep their word no matter who uncomfortable or unpleasant it may become. Our ya, ya is enough to bind us before God as a promise to someone. The only promises that we should not keep is sinful ones. Many times promises involve sacrifices out of our comfort zones. If you promised something just by saying you would do it then God expects you to do it to the "best of your ability" as if you were doing it for the Lord Himself. We can't just confess the sin of breaking a promise and think we can go our merry way thinking that we no longer are accountable. As long as you are still able to fulfill your word (even if it's uncomfortable and you don't want to) you need to go to that person, repent of your sin and make amends by keeping your promise. Can you really come into the presence of God knowing that you refuse to keep your word? What kind of relationship can you have with the Lord if you are able to keep your word and don't?

Integrity means Honor with Respect
Proverbs 19:1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool. God classes Integrity more valuable than the riches of this world. He classes Integrity more valuable than anything that we could ever own. Cheating, stealing, lying, breaking one's promises, withholding tithe money out of greed or spite is the world's way but not what the Lord desires a Christian to be. We are required to live a higher standard of living by holding our integrity dear to ourselves. When people of the world look at you as a Christian do they say you are no different than them or do they say they really respect you? Poverty if far better if a person has integrity and honor than all the riches that every existed throughout time. What is your life worth? Can you take any material thing with you when you die? We all need to get our priorities straight and realize that keeping our word is important to our self-respect as well as our integrity.

A Pastor should never Compromise his Integrity no matter what
Proverbs 12:3 A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved. Solomon knew that our word is our bond (promise,) and following the Lords word is important as a Christian because His word is our bond to us. Our character is reflected by the words that we speak and the vows that we make. Broken promises causes a great deal of hurt and is the same sin of lying. Personal Integrity as a Christian is held valuable by God when we honor our commitments. People can't sin and get away with it because the Lord sees everything we say and do. No one can get away from their responsibilities (the promises that they make) and not answer to God for them. What kinds of rewards do you want in Heaven? When you see the face of Jesus, will He say, "Well done good and faithful servant," or will He have tears in His eyes over the hurts caused by broken promises?

Half truths are deceptive…
Genesis 12:11-13 And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee. Sarai was Abraham's wife as well as his half sister but it was immorally deceptive and caused hurt as well as shame. Sarai was wealthy and beautiful and Abraham believed that she would be taken from him. He was also afraid that he would be killed too. Did Abraham trust God to keep His word to protect them? Abraham forgot that what God says He will do, He will do! His word is valuable and the Lord has integrity! Can we do no less than to faithfully follow God's example by keeping our word? If we trust the Lord to keep His word can people trust us to keep ours?

Once given our word we should never go back or alter it!
Lev 27:9-10 And if it be a beast, whereof men bring an offering unto the LORD, all that any man giveth of such unto the LORD shall be holy. He shall not alter it, nor change it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good: and if he shall at all change beast for beast, then it and the exchange thereof shall be holy.
God expects us to keep our word even if it costs us dearly. He wants us to take and keep our promises and not alter or change our word to suit our selfishness. Not matter who difficult, embarrassing, hard, or burdensome it may be, we still need to keep our word to the best of our ability. That doesn't mean that we have a right to grudgingly do it in a spiritual manner but as pleasing unto the Lord.

Be responsible with your words and vows!
Titus 2:7-8 In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
God desires us to be moral witness in our daily walk and that includes our morals. The words that we speak and the promises that we make demonstrate our Christian values. This is because of the people around us watching. We must value our words as if they were gold. People might see Jesus through our eyes if we are honest with our words. Avoid criticism and hurt by listening before you speak and honoring what you commit to when you do. Be sound of speech and honest in your promises!

Words reveal to the world and to God how honest we are
James 3:9-10 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Speak words that are pleasing to God and act with honor upon the promises made. If you have promised something and back out of it than deep hurt can be left behind. This grieves the Holy Spirit and can cause a wound that may last a lifetime. We are never to hurt anyone of the Lord's children and when we do than there is a price to be paid. Can anyone truly stand before Jesus knowing that they hurt someone and not feel convicted? I can't, can you?

God never breaks His word nor does He give us the right to break ours
2 Chr. 21:7 Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever. The light mentioned in this verse was the light of Jesus Christ God's very own son. Jesus the Messiah of the world sits upon the throne of David and will rule forever. He paid the price for our sins upon the cross. God kept His word by giving us His only begotten Son to take away the sins of the world. The Lord's word is valuable to us because by that promise being kept and fulfilled we might be saved. Words have value and we too must keep our promises like He did for us.

God's delights in in people who keep their promises
Proverbs 12:22 Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight. Proverbs 12:25 Heaviness in the heart maketh it stoop: (is heavy and hurts) but a word maketh it glad. Words are important and have a great deal of value when used in the right way for Godly purposes. Have you ever seen someone who just had a promise broken to them or maybe you had a promise broken to you? What did it feel like? Think of something that really matters to you that someone has promised to do. Maybe they kept you waiting for it a long, long time and it really mattered to you. Now consider how you would feel if it were broken. Try stepping into someone else's shoes when you break your word to them. Feel terrible doesn't it? Is this the will of the Father to cause this kind of hurt? Is there a promise that you made to someone that you can still keep? What does God want you to do? What are you waiting for, honor your word and go do it!

The Vows we say must be said in truth and honesty (Be careful for what you promise because God will hold you responsible! Eph. 4:24-25 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another).
When we act like Godly people full of honor and self-respect than we are pleasing to the Lord. Our Christian walk should be seen by everyone we meet. We should daily strive to leave our sins behind taking up our cross and following the Lord's example. We should daily work at changing our attitudes and bring our words into line with the Word of God. Lying by not keeping one's word causes hurts, disappointments, disruptions and disharmony to the body of Christ. It makes people loose respect as well as creates conflicts and destroys relationships. Don't let the devil deceive you into breaking your word or make you think that you can justify altering your word to suit you. That is being deceptive and God sees right through it. This kind of pain can become bottled up inside a person's heart for years to come. We shouldn't allow the devil to divide us when the best thing we could do would be to honor our word in the first place. Integrity, honesty, decency, truthfulness and virtue are all required to show people that we love them. This is the will of the Father!

Just by saying you “will” do something, you have “given your word!”
Matthew 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. What does God want you to do but let your word be yes, yes or no, no when you are speaking.. People will come to respect you and follow your lead if you are honest. Always be truthful saying what you mean and meaning what you say! Honor your word so that it will be right before the Lord. Integrity, honor and respect is the reward for keeping one's word. Let's all remember to live up to the high standards that the Lord has set before us.Why do you think some non-Christians are nicer people than many professing Christians?tag:abcpreachers.ning.com,2009-06-17:916966:BlogPost:7990742009-06-17T15:27:56.000ZTamika Phai Millshttp://abcpreachers.ning.com/profile/walkingintomydestiny
It's easy to be nice when things are going right in your life. By being in different shopping centers, I've witnessed people from all kinds of backgrounds change from smiling, happy people to ranting, raving lunatics in a matter of seconds because they were told something wasn't in their size, something couldn't be returned, or some other thing. Christians are people with good days and bad days. Since you cannot know what is going on in another person's life, it's unfair to judge a whole group…

Christians are people with good days and bad days. Since you cannot know what is going on in another person's life, it's unfair to judge a whole group based on the attitudes of a few.

Besides, how do you know that the person professing to be a Christian really is one? Many people think they are Christians because they go to church, pastoring, preaching, believe in God, etc. But have they truly made Jesus the Lord of their lives?

If they have, great! Still, it takes time to change habits and behaviors that have always been there. It is unfortunate that many Christians, even after receiving salvation, still don't understand that they are a NEW CREATION, with a NEW NATURE, and so they fall back on their old nature. They've either never read or understood that their "attitudes and thoughts must constantly be changing for the better" (Eph. 4:24) or that, "quarreling, harsh words, and dislike of others should have no place" (Eph. 4:31).

I am sorry you have been hurt by Christians or by a bad church experience, but please, don't let what others do keep you from giving God a chance. People make bad choices when driving, too; they treat it like a game instead of the enormous responsibility it is. Yet, you didn't let it stop you from driving, right? So, why let others decide for you whether you follow Christ or not? Give Jesus a chance. He's worth every bit of your time, heart, and energy.90-Day Prayer & Consecration Challenge..tag:abcpreachers.ning.com,2009-06-01:916966:BlogPost:7674742009-06-01T07:23:36.000ZTamika Phai Millshttp://abcpreachers.ning.com/profile/walkingintomydestiny

True love is God’s kind of love. This is a love that protects, cherishes the person loved. It is agape love. Here is what the Bible says about true love:
True love is God’s kind of love. This is a love that protects, cherishes the person loved. It is agape love. Here is what the Bible says about true love:
"Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned."
~ Song of Solomon 8:7

There is a remedy for most diseases. There is a tonic that makes you younger. There is a heavenly substance that makes you more beautiful and more creative. There is a universal essence that creates within you the spirit of dedicated hard work and selfless giving. This life’s tonic and essence is true love.
“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” ~ 1 John 4:8

True Love or God's kind of love is an essential ingredient in any relationship. It should direct your dating, marriage, family and all your other relationships.

Here are a few characteristics of true love which is the Agape love – the kind of love that should direct all your thoughts, feelings and actions.

1. True Love is especially for Husband and Wife
This is the kind of love that should manifest in your marriage and family. It is the kind of love you should lay the foundation for during your dating, and marriage.

You are to love your spouse as Christ loves the church. How did Christ love the church? He gave Himself for it! It is in the same way you should love your spouse and your entire family.
You should give your self totally for your marriage and family.

True love cares for all. If you are to love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you and pray for them who persecute or use you despitefully, then you are expected to do far better for your loved ones. ~ Matthew 5:44

2. It is commanded.
Love your neighbor as your self. It is a compulsory love. Either you like it or not you must love other people with God’s kind of love.

This also shows it is a kind of love you manifest only when you know how to love your own self. You can never love your neighbor properly until you understand how to love your self. Where do you start from? Find out first who you are in Christ. Build your self image and self worth from God’s point of view. When you don’t know how to love your self, you will place little value upon your self.
Your life will mean little and the life of others would have no value in your eyes. It is lack of self respect and bad self image that leads to crime, sin and all kinds of immorality.
~Mark 12:29-31

3. It is your Greatest Possession.
This is your greatest possession in life. Whatever spiritual gift or material possession you have, without God’s kind of love you have become a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. ~ 1 Corinthians 13:1

4. It forgives a multitude of mistakes.
When someone does something wrong to you especially in a relationship, the first reaction is to cut the person off. Yet, God’s position is that you show more love to the person.
Why? The answer is simple. God’s love covers a multitude of sins. It covers countless faults and mistakes. If you are the type that likes to find faults in others then you will find it difficult to love God’s way. ~ 1 Peter 4:8
God is not counting people’s sins against them. He is rather reconciling people unto Himself.

5. It to love people no matter what.
God’s kind of love is a very strange one. It loves without counting. With Agape love, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you have done or fail to do. God loves you all the same. God loves you while you were still His enemy. Romans 5:10. Jesus died for you while you were still a sinner. ~ Romans 5:6-8.
God wants you to act now by loving people the same way.
This is a kind of love shown to a person who does not want to be loved. It is love for someone who doesn’t seem to deserve love because of what he or she is doing or saying. Agape is a kind of love which loves regardless of people’s actions.

You can learn more about the characteristics of God’s kind of love in the Bible. You need to live according to your Bible’s teaching. Let God’s love that is shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Spirit begin to guide your thoughts, actions and your talking.Have You Check Your Attitude Lately?tag:abcpreachers.ning.com,2009-05-21:916966:BlogPost:7373332009-05-21T21:30:00.000ZTamika Phai Millshttp://abcpreachers.ning.com/profile/walkingintomydestiny
According to God’s word, when you become a Christian, a part of your new creation is the development of new attitudes — your attitude should become like that of Jesus. The Bible says, "Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:" (Philippians 2:5). "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off the old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds." (Ephesians 4:22 NIV)

Bad Attitudes

Most of us can…
According to God’s word, when you become a Christian, a part of your new creation is the development of new attitudes — your attitude should become like that of Jesus.

Most of us can easily identify bad attitudes when they are displayed outwardly in our words or actions, such a negativeness, criticalness, rebellion, defiance, impatience, uncooperative, apathy, discouragement, independence, presumption, arrogance, self-centeredness, rudeness and such like. These are examples of bad attitudes which Christians should reject. However, keep in mind, attitudes are inner dispositions of the heart and thoughts — they are the hidden intentions which will eventually serve as the basis for our actions. "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he." (Prov. 23:7). In reality, no one else really knows the thoughts of your heart, except you and God. Consequently, attitude is something that only you and God can work out — a change which must take place inwardly.

An example of a bad attitude is seen in George Brown. He went to church cheerfully as long as his business continued to prosper — as long as everything went well for him. He sang joyfully in the choir, he rarely missed a service. But when hard times set in George began to drop away. He became resentful toward God, even critical of other Christians. The right attitude to have when difficulty comes is to persevere in faith and draw nearer to God — to fall at the feet of Jesus. The Bible makes it clear that God works all things together for our good when we love Him, and the testing of our faith is for our benefit. Trouble will never defeat the person with a right attitude.

Another bad attitude can be seen in Sally Smith. She had been a Christian for nearly two years. She loved the Lord and was growing as a Christian, but was still battling sins of the flesh — she occasionally fell to the temptation of drunkenness. One evening the Pastor and his family were entering a restaurant, when he noticed Sally slouching at the distant bar, obviously intoxicated. The next Sunday after service, the Pastor and his wife took Sally aside privately, and warned her gently about the sins of drunkenness. He encouraged her to repent of this activity and prayed with her. Sally was offended by the Pastor’s forthrightness. She immediately changed churches and would often be heard "bad-mouthing" that church and Pastor. First, she should have had a humble, submissive attitude toward the Pastor’s loving correction of sin which was based upon God’s Word (2 Tim. 4:2, 1 Cor. 5:11-13, Gal. 5:19-21, Gal. 6:1). As a general rule, persons who have a bad attitude toward authority figures always have a problem with God.

Good Attitudes

According to scripture, your attitude toward life, your circumstances, or toward other people should always be like the Lord’s — as is defined by scripture. Good attitudes are generally demonstrated in being positive, encouraging, loving, humble, teachable, cooperative, considerate, selfless, loyal, persevering and so forth (Gal. 5:22-23).

To God — Our attitude should be reverence, submission, love, trust, humbleness, obedience, worshipful, and prayerful. (Psa. 111:10, Mark 12:30, John 14:15, Jas. 4:7, 1 Sam. 15:23)

To God’s Children — Our attitude should be love, forgiveness, consideration, caring, encouragement, kindness, humility, unselfishness, respectful, and impartial. (John 13:34-35, 15:12, Rom. 12:10, 13:10, 15:7, Jas. 2:9, Eph. 4:2, 4:32, Col. 3:16, 1 Thes. 5:11, Heb. 3:13, 1 Cor. 13:4-8).

To Authority — Our attitude should be respectful, cooperative, accountable, humble, helpful, encouraging, loyal. Not resentful, defiant or disrespectful. (Heb. 13:17, 1 Pet. 2:13-15)

To Hard Circumstances — Our attitude should be patience, thankfulness, persevering, believing. (Rom. 8:28, Gal. 1:9)

To Our Church — Our attitude should be respectful, faithful, cooperative, helpful, willingness, dependable, participating, encouraging. (1 Cor. 10:32, 1 Cor. 14:12, Heb. 2:12)

To Duty — Our attitude should be faithfulness, responsibleness, obedience, cooperation, endurance. (Luke 16:10, 1 Cor. 4:2)

To Unfairness — Our attitude should be patience, humility, confident in God’s justice. (Rom. 12:19, Luke 18:7)

To Disappointment or Tragedy — Our attitude should be humility, submission to God, prayerful, confidence in God’s fairness. (Psa. 62:5, Jer. 17:5, Deut. 32:4, Job 13:15, Rom. 8:28)

To the Lost — Our attitude should be compassionate, forgiving, encouraging, helpful, reconciling them to God. (2 Cor. 5:18, 2 Pet. 3:9, Matt. 18:11-14)

To Sin — Our attitude should be uncompromising, unaccepting, intolerant, unsympathetic, yet compassionate and reconciliatory for the repentant. (Matt. 18:8-9, Gal. 6:1)

To Success — Our attitude should be humble, grateful, God-glorifying, not self-exalting or forgetful to God. (Jas. 4:6, 10, Prov. 16:18)

To Misunderstanding — Our attitude should be peacemaking, reconciliatory, patient, forgiving. (Col. 3:13, Matt. 5:9, Phil. 2:14)

How To Develop Good Attitudes

1. Identify and Repent of Bad Attitudes

Acts 8:22 "Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you."

2. Submit Your Attitudes to God

Bring your attitudes into obedience to God’s Word. Apply discipline to your thought life — submit your thoughts to those of Christ’s. A good attitude is a matter of faith, disregarding your feelings, with a determination to embrace God’s outlook and disposition.

2 Corinthians 10:5 "casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ..."

3. Equip And Feed Your Attitudes

Dwell on the things that God’s word tells us to — those good and virtuous things. If you dwell on the negative, your attitude will reflect the same.

Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy; meditate on these things."Are You A Leader?tag:abcpreachers.ning.com,2009-05-16:916966:BlogPost:7200922009-05-16T23:04:45.000ZTamika Phai Millshttp://abcpreachers.ning.com/profile/walkingintomydestiny

Through the years I've learned that leadership actually has many faces. The man or woman in whom I'd spotted leadership potential simply had a different style of leading than the more common leadership type to which he or she had compared himself or herself. Over time, as his or her style of leadership fell into sync with an appropriate leadership need in his church, he or she became a high-impact lay leader.

Different leaders often lead with dramatically different styles. As I can discern it, they all have the spiritual gift of leadership, but they express that gift in varied ways.

Additionally, certain leadership styles fit better than others with specific kingdom needs. I am increasingly convinced that highly effective leaders often have impact not only because they are highly gifted but also because their leadership styles mesh perfectly with specific ministry needs. It follows then that discovering and developing unique leadership styles is another major key to leadership effectiveness.

1. THE VISIONARY LEADERSHIP STYLE

What distinguishes the visionary leader is that he or she has a crystal clear picture in mind of what the future could hold. Such a leader casts powerful visions and has indefatigable enthusiasm for turning those visions into reality.

Visionary leaders shamelessly appeal to anybody and everybody to get on board with their vision. They talk about it, write about, and burn white-hot for it themselves. They are idealistic, faith-filled leaders who wholeheartedly believe that if they cast their vision clearly enough and often enough it will become reality. They are not easily discouraged or deterred. People who tell them it can't be done just fuel the fire of their spirit. They respond to opposition by digging in their heels and raising their voices even louder. Put them in front of the troops and they will splash vision all over them.

Visionary leaders may or may not have the natural ability to form teams, align talents, set goals, or manage progress toward the achievement of the vision. To be effective over the long haul they will either have to find other people who can help them or they will have work very hard to develop the skills that don't come naturally to them. But this one thing is sure: they carry the vision, they cast the vision, they draw people into it, and they'll die trying to fulfill it.

2. THE DIRECTIONAL LEADERSHIP STYLE

The directional style of leadership doesn't get much press, but it is exceedingly important. The strength of this leader is his or her uncanny, God-given ability to choose the right path for an organization as it approaches a critical intersection.

A critical intersection is that point when an organization, a department, or a church starts asking, "Should we stay the course or is it time for wholesale change? Should we focus on growth or on consolidation? Should we start new ministries or deepen and improve existing ones? Should we build a new facility, renovate the old one, or relocate? Should we start a contemporary service or update our traditional service? Should we start a Gen X ministry or work harder to integrate younger attendees into our existing ministries? Should we steer the organization 15 degrees to either side of the course we're presently taking? Is it time for some fresh staff or can we keep on dancing with those who brought us here? Which course should we take?"

These are directional issues and they are huge, so huge that they often immobilize a church or sub-ministry. But a leader with a directional style is able to sort through all the options. He or she can carefully assess the values of the organization, the mission, the strengths, the weaknesses, the resources, the personnel, and the openness to change. With remarkable wisdom, the directional leader points the church or sub-ministry in the right direction.

3. THE STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP STYLE

Strategic leaders have the God-given ability to take an exciting vision and break it down into a series of sequential, achievable steps. This gift of leadership allows an organization to march intentionally toward the actualization of its mission.

Visions excite people. They inspire people. They compel people into action. But unless people eventually see progress toward the fulfillment of the vision they will conclude that the vision caster is just a dreamer blowing smoke, and their morale will plummet.

Strategically oriented leaders form a game plan that everybody can understand and participate in. Then they challenge team members to "work the plan." They say, "Don't go off on tangents. Don't get distracted. Just put one foot in front of the other according to the plan. Come to work and do what needs to be done today to take the first step. Then tomorrow take the next step, then the next. Stay with the plan and you'll reach the goal." And that's what happens under a strategic leader: the game plan eventually leads to the actualization of the vision.

A strategic leader will also strive to bring the various sub-groups of an organization into alignment so that all the organization's energy will be focused toward realizing the vision.

4. THE MANAGING LEADERSHIP STYLE

According to some leadership literature, the term "managing leader" is an oxymoron. That's because some leadership experts draw careful distinctions between what managers do and what leaders do. It is often said that "leaders do right things, while managers do things right." I agree with certain distinctions commonly drawn between managers and leaders. But when referring to a managing leadership style, I'm describing a leader who has the ability to organize people, processes, and resources to achieve a mission.

The managing leader salivates at the thought of bringing order out of chaos. He or she finds deep satisfaction in monitoring and fine-tuning a process, and motivates team members by establishing appropriate mile markers on the road to the destination.

It's surprising how many visionary leaders are inept at managing people, processes, and money. It's also surprising how many directional and strategic leaders are incapable of actually putting the players and plans and resources in place to achieve the goals of the organization.

Managing leaders seldom captivate attention as do those who give the inspiring vision talks or make the critical decisions or put the strategic plans in place. But in the day-to-day operational world, someone has to manage people and progress to move the organization toward its goals.

5. THE MOTIVATIONAL LEADERSHIP STYLE

Leaders with the motivational style are the modern day Vince Lombardis. They have that God-given ability to keep their teammates fired up. They are on the constant lookout for "sagging shoulders and dull eyes," and they move quickly to inject the right kind of inspiration into those who need it most. They have a keen sense about who needs public recognition and who needs just a private word of encouragement. They seem to know exactly when a particular team member would get a necessary boost from a day off, an office move, a title change, or a training opportunity.

Some leaders view the motivational approach as a lightweight style of leadership. But it's a huge mistake to underestimate the value of this style. As a team member I'd be glad to make do with a lower-voltage vision caster, an occasional bad call at an intersection, or a periodic lapse of managerial effectiveness, if the leader I reported to would consistently fire me up, call out my best, cheer on my progress, celebrate my accomplishments, and tell me I was important to the cause.

Motivational leaders realize that even our best teammates get tired out and lose focus. Sometimes our most dependable colleagues experience mission drift or start to wonder if what they're doing really matters to God or anybody else.

Motivational leaders don't get bitter or vengeful when moral sinks. They view it as an opportunity to dream of new ways to inspire and lift the spirits of everyone on the team.

Jesus consistently motivated His disciples. He changed Simon's name and honored him as Peter, the rock upon which He would build His church. He motivated His followers with promises of reward in this life and in the next. He planned getaways and retreats.

6. THE SHEPHERDING LEADERSHIP STYLE

The shepherding leader is a man or a woman who builds a team slowly, loves team members deeply, nurtures them gently, supports them consistently, listens to them patiently, and prays for them diligently. This kind of leader draws team members into such a rich community experience that their hearts begin to overflow with good will that energizes them for achieving their mission.

While visionary leaders tend to attract people because of the compelling nature of their cause, shepherding leaders tend to draw people together almost regardless of their cause. In other words, shepherding leaders tend to shepherd and nurture a group of folks so thoroughly, so deeply, that when it comes to the cause, teammates are often heard to say, "The cause doesn't matter all that much. If it's a God-honoring mission that we can do together, count me in. As long as we can stay in community and keep our shepherd, we'll do it."

Under a shepherding leader the range of vision can be very broad. What really matters are the community dynamics.

Leaders must remember that although there are many cause-driven people who are waiting to be drawn into a mission by a visionary leader, there are also plenty of community starved people who need to be welcomed onto a team where they can be nurtured and loved. Only then will they be motivated to answer the call of a cause. Without tender care they will hold back, but if shepherded lovingly they will joyfully pursue almost any kingdom purpose with loyal dedication.

7. THE TEAM-BUILDING LEADERSHIP STYLE

The team-building leader knows the vision and understands how to achieve it, but realizes it will take a team of leaders and workers to accomplish the goal. Team-builders have a supernatural insight into people that allows them to successfully find and develop the right people with the right abilities, the right character, and the right chemistry with other team members. Then good team-builders know how to put these people in the right positions for the right reasons, thus freeing them to produce the right results.

When the appropriate people have been placed in appropriate positions, the team-building leader says to the appointed team, "You know what we're trying to do. You know what part of the mission you're responsible for. You know what part the rest of us around the circle are responsible for. So head out! Get on with it! Work hard in your department. Communicate with your co-laborers. Create action. Get the job done!"

The difference between the shepherding leader and the teambuilding leader is that the team-builder is driven more by a clear understanding of the vision than by the desire to nurture and build community. Of course, building teams always involves building community, but the unique strength of team-building leaders is that they have a stranglehold on the strategy and an acute insight into people that allows them to make precise placements of personnel into critical leadership roles.

Leaders gifted as team-builders may or may not be skilled at managing their teams. In fact, many of them reason that management isn't all that critical anyway; if the right people are in the right slots doing the right things for the right reasons, these people will accomplish their goals whether or not there is someone looking over their shoulders.

8. THE ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP STYLE

The entrepreneurial leadership style has a unique twist. Entrepreneurial leaders may possess any of the other leadership styles, but what distinguishes these leaders from the others is that they function optimally in start-up mode. If these leaders can't regularly give birth to something new they begin to lose energy. Once a venture is up and operational, once the effort requires steady ongoing management, once things get complicated and require endless discussions about policies, systems, and controls, then most entrepreneurial leaders lose enthusiasm, focus, and sometimes even confidence.

At that point they start peeking over the fence and wondering if it might be time to start something new. They may feel terribly guilty at the thought of leaving the ministry, organization, or department they started, but eventually they have to face the truth: if they can't give birth to something brand new every few years, something inside of them starts to die. That's just their style. And it's important in the kingdom.

I believe the apostle Paul was an entrepreneurial leader. He pioneered and built churches in areas where the name of Christ was not yet known. After launching these churches he turned them over to other people who could run them, so that he could move on without apology. He may not have described himself with these exact words, but he obviously knew how he was gifted and how he could most optimally serve the kingdom.

How the kingdom would be diminished if entrepreneurial leaders stopped dreaming new dreams and starting new ventures!

9. THE RE-ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP STYLE

While entrepreneurial leaders love to start new endeavors, re-engineering leaders are at their best in turn-around environments. These leaders are gifted by God to thrive on the challenge of taking a troubled situation - a team that has lost its vision, a ministry where people are in wrong positions, a department trying to move forward without a strategy - and turning it around. This leader says, "This is my lucky day. I get to start re-engineering this mess."

These leaders enthusiastically dig in to uncover the original mission and the cause of the mission drift. They re-evaluate personnel, strategy, and values. They repeatedly meet with team members to help them figure out where the "old" went wrong and what the "new" should look like. Then they prod team members on to action.

Re-engineering leaders love to patch up, tune up, and revitalize hurting departments or organizations. But when everything is back on track and operating smoothly, these leaders may or may not be motivated to stay engaged. Some of them are content to stick around and enjoy the fruits of their labors, but many prefer to find another department or organization that needs to be overhauled. When they find one they start salivating. "Would you look at that kingdom train wreck?" they say. "If I could get my hands on all that twisted metal, I know I could turn it into something great for God."

I believe that God has placed re-engineering leaders in every church. It's your job and mine to find them and put them to work.

10. THE BRIDGE-BUILDING LEADERSHIP STYLE

Though there are additional leadership styles that could be mentioned, I'd like to end with the bridge-building style. While author Garry Wills calls this the electoral or political style, I call it the bridge-building style because I am referring to it outside of a political framework.

Bridge-building leaders make important contributions to large organizations such as parachurch ministries, denominations, and educational institutions because they have the unique ability to bring together under a single leadership umbrella a wide range of constituent groups. This enables a complex organization to stay focused on a single mission.

The unique gift that bridge-building leaders bring to this feat is enormous flexibility. They are diplomats who possess a supernaturally inspired ability to compromise and negotiate. They are specially gifted to listen, understand, and think outside of the box. But above everything else, bridge-builders love the challenge of relating to diverse groups of people.

In start-up ventures, leaders are usually surrounded by family members and close friends who share their exciting new vision. All goes well until that little start-up group doubles or triples in size. New people bring new leadership challenges. How do all these new people fit into the original group? What happens when the leadership team has to be divided? How do you maintain optimal group dynamics? How does the point leader relate to all these people?

Now imagine leading a megachurch or large parachurch organization made up of scores of well-defined constituencies. Many of these special interest groups care little about the overall vision of the umbrella ministry. They simply want to make sure that their particular concerns are attended to.

Bridge-building leaders are most energized when facing the challenge of drawing together and meeting the needs of varied constituents. These leaders would joyfully meet privately with the heads of various sub-ministries to understand their passions and their goals. After building relationships of trust, the bridge-builders would try to refine the vision of each sub-leader, negotiating with them until their goals were working in harmony with the overall vision and mission of the larger organization.

When leaders are optimally positioned so that their leadership strengths mesh perfectly with the specific needs of a church or an organization they can have huge impact. Under their leadership the troops can be mobilized, the mission can be achieved, and the kingdom can move forward like never before.14 Ways To Support Your Pastor...tag:abcpreachers.ning.com,2009-05-06:916966:BlogPost:6911012009-05-06T23:30:00.000ZTamika Phai Millshttp://abcpreachers.ning.com/profile/walkingintomydestiny

Eph 4:11-16 (NKJV) “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, (12) for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, (13) till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

A Pastor is one of Christ’s five office gifts to the Church. Yes, pastoring is a gift... and a pastor happens to be a GIFT that God gives to a church. The term pastor comes from “shepherd,” one who guides and cares for a flock.

Serving as a pastor is a remarkable and awesome blessing and privilege, but sometimes pastors can be the most misunderstood people in the church. Often their hours are long, the pay minimal, the criticism considerable and constant. Despite the joys of serving God, feelings of disappointment and discouragement can plague the best of them. However, here are 14 ways God can use you to become a blessing in his life, which also enhance your ability to receive from his ministry:

1. Roll up your Sleeves and Become a Part of the Team – Attend church faithfully and show that you’re eager to follow his leadership. This will bless your life and be a tremendous encouragement to your pastor. Look for opportunities to use your gifts and talents for the work of Christ. And become a soul winner. People all around us are lost in sin, dying and going to hell. Do all in your power to win them to Jesus Christ. Tell them what Christ has done for you and what He can do for them. “Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.” (James 5:19-20)

2. Be Openly Responsive - Nothing excites a spiritual leader like seeing people respond to the preaching and teaching. Show him that you’re listening, and even say Amen. Not only will it make his day, but it may make the service shorter... as it is a proven fact that preachers often unconsciously repeat themselves when they feel they’re not connecting with their hearers.

3. Submit to the Leadership of your Pastor - The Bible places special emphasis on submission to spiritual authorities. The writer of Hebrews says, “Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.” (Heb 13:17). We are also instructed to follow and imitate those spiritual leaders as they follow Christ. Follow the man of God who is following Jesus Christ as set forth in the Word of God. “Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.”(Heb 13:7)

4. Treat him with Proper Respect - Treat him with as much or more respect that you would anyone else in authority. Sometimes folks tend to think of him as an employee, instead of their spiritual leader. A pastor, however, is God’s appointed man, to help guide the soul of you and your family, and needs our love and respect. Express your respect to his authority by addressing him as “pastor” rather than by his first name, especially while on the church premises. “And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, (13) and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake...” (1 Thes 5:12-13)

5. Pray, Pray, Pray for Your Pastor - You know how much opposition that you receive yourself... from the world, the flesh, and the devil... and be assured, your pastor receives much more than you. Pray for him every day, and ask God to shower your pastor with an abundance of love, hope, joy, faith, peace, power, wisdom, and courage. Pray for your spiritual leader’s maturity and growth in the faith. While you pray be mindful of this wise advice from the German writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: “If you treat a person as he is, he will stay as he is; but if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be, he will become what he ought to be and could be.” As Paul wrote, “Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith.” (2 Thes 3:1-2)

6. Commit to Stand with Him Through Tough Times - Be a REAL friend… not just a fair-weather buddy. A genuine friend is someone who remains steadfast with you regardless of what may come. He stands with you in the adverse circumstances of life, does not forsake you when others may abandon you, helps guard you when you are off guard, helps hold you accountable to your values, forgives and encourages you if or when you fail.

7. Toss out the Cookie Cutter - Don’t expect your pastor to do everything the same way the last pastor did. Trust God to use your spiritual leader to bring about relevant and effective ministry to the present need... and don’t stereotype him either with the strengths or short-comings of other spiritual leaders you’ve known. Let your pastor be himself. Your pastor is an imperfect human being, and is unique with his own distinct personality, gifts and talents. Not all pastors are the same, so don’t put him in a box and expect him to be a duplicate of others you’ve known.

8. Be Patient and Understanding - with your pastor, his mate, and his children. Do not expect your pastor or his family to be perfect, they are human too. A man of God has the same human tendencies that we all face, and so does his family. Let your pastor’s spouse be herself, and don’t place unspoken expectations on her to perform particular ministries or be like former pastor’s spouses. Just love them in finding their place.

9. Support him financially - so he can keep his mind on the work of the ministry. If a man cannot properly care for his family, he will be distracted from the ministry. It costs your pastor just as much to live as it does you, and in some cases much more because of added expenses …such as books, transportation or the way he is expected to dress. “Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.” (1 Tim 5:17-18)

10. Give Him the Benefit of the Doubt - Support your pastor even when he can’t publicly explain why certain decisions or actions have been made. Oftentimes, to protect the privacy of others, pastors and leaders frequently cannot disclose everything publicly... and professional ethics sometimes demand silence over issues that are very sensitive. If a tough decision takes place, support your pastor and avoid the criticism that usually comes along with such situations.

11. Knock off Behind-His-Back Criticism - Ministers, as well as virtually all public authority figures, are often the subject of incessant criticism. If there is a legitimate matter that concerns the leader, it should be addressed to him personally… but criticism behind one’s back certainly doesn’t help them, and when distributed about can cause a lot of harm to a leader’s reputation and credibility.

12. Squelch Gossip and Bad Mouthing - Do not speak against or listen to gossip or slander about your pastor. If you hear negative comments, respond with a positive one. If misinformation is being spread, correct it with the accurate information. Or, if people are gossiping, just walk away. The Apostle Paul said, “Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses.” (1 Tim 5:19)

13. Look for opportunities to encourage him - Tell him when he has helped you. Ephesians 4:29 teaches us to says things that edify, and you minister grace to your pastor whenever you tell him how he has helped you. He will be a more effective, dedicated servant of God if you give him some feedback on his ministry to you (see Prov. 3:27). It will also be very encouraging if you tell your Sunday School teacher, spouse, and your children how they have helped or been a blessing to you. Praise doesn’t cost – but it pays tremendous dividends – in the home, in the church, in the school and on the job. And be sure to recognize your pastor and his spouse for birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas. It is not always necessary to give gifts, but to be remembered on these special days is an expression of your love and encouragement.

14. Stay focused on the big picture - The big picture is JESUS... to love, forgive and seek to bring souls into the Kingdom of God. Don’t get weighed down by church politics, nonsense, offenses or whatever else goes on, but keep your focus on Jesus and on what the church and the pastor are really all about!
