There are three main areas of submission to human authority laid out for the church, and in each case submission is described as a duty: women are to submit to their husbands, children are to submit to their parents, church members are to submit to pastors and leaders. Submission is not voluntary in these cases: God expects us to be submissive and will not accept our excuses for rebelliousness.<br />

<br />
However, the counsel of God to husbands, fathers, and pastors is that they can compel submission if they exhibit self-sacrificing love and are nurturing to their charges. Delinquent husbands, domineering fathers and unloving pastors are still due respect and submission for the sake of their "offices"—but they will only receive it as the Holy Spirit ministers forbearance and grace to their neglected wives, frustrated children and abused congregations. On the contrary, any husband, father, or pastor who takes the initiative to love as Christ loved will draw submission out of his charges naturally and responsively. This is the biblical model: if you sow into your mate or child or congregation the good seed of love, you will reap the harvest of submission. All affected toughness and willfulness will dissipate… your wife or child, or congregation will humbly follow the man that has demonstrated his care and selflessness.Lessons from the Clubhousetag:abcpreachers.ning.com,2009-09-25:916966:BlogPost:10144672009-09-25T21:24:49.000ZJoseph Gillhttp://abcpreachers.ning.com/profile/JosephGill
In the clubhouse of a sports team, sometimes<br />
there's a need for confrontation and challenge.<br />
The coach or the team captain will, behind<br />
closed doors, chew out teammates that aren't<br />
showing the effort or comradery that they<br />
should. They'll call out the selfish players<br />
and chasten the lazy ones.<br />

But only in a dysfunctional clubhouse will<br />
any of those criticisms make it into the sports<br />

But only in a dysfunctional clubhouse will<br />
any of those criticisms make it into the sports<br />
columns or call-in shows. To the outside world,<br />
the team strives to show its cohesion and<br />
and togetherness. You know a team is in trouble<br />
when instead of settling their disputes in-house,<br />
they snipe at one another through the media.<br />
<br />
We in the church could learn a little from the<br />
sports world. It's fair here to complain about<br />
the "church folk," where you might suspect that<br />
the majority of participants are sons and<br />
daughters of God. But it would be very unwise<br />
indeed to make such criticisms to another venue<br />
that you suspected was populated with unbelievers.<br />
<br />
Sister Wag-Her-Tongue may be spreading rumors<br />
about you, but please don't complain about her to<br />
your unsaved spouse. Please refrain from telling<br />
your worldly co-workers how Deacon Not-For-Real<br />
has done you wrong. These kinds of "oughts"<br />
should be resolved within the brotherhood, and<br />
not exposed to the larger society. Some things<br />
are better kept behind closed doors.
