How to Resist Temptation

Over the past couple weeks we’ve learned that God will give us the wisdom to withstand the trials that we face along the journey toward maturity. Now we come to learning how to handle the spiritual-death-dealing process of temptation. The mature Christian is patient in trial. But we must understand that sometimes the trials we face on the inside are testing on the outside, and sometimes the testing on the outside become temptation on the inside. In light of all that we’ve learned about…

Why the Black Church needs Theologians

I have been preaching now for over 20 years and a lot has happen in that time that has been both a benefit and a

detriment to the church. One such thing is the advancement of televangelists, next is the growing refit in the educational levels between the black pulpit and pew. This has lead me to believe that the Black church is in danger for

becoming an endanger spices, becoming over run with false teaching and having no real way to work through it. If my observations are correct…

Should Christians Celebrate Christmas?

Introduction

"Should Christians celebrate Christmas?" or, "How should a Christian celebrate Christmas?" These are questions of concern for many sincere believers. In fact, many believers dislike the season and have refused to celebrate it at all. A number of reasons are given, and while I might agree with some of their concerns and some of the reasons offered against the observance of Christmas, I would not necessarily agree with their conclusions.

One day I happened to catch a TV… Continue

"Women pastors / preachers? What does the Bible say about women in pastoral ministry?"

There is perhaps no more hotly debated issue in the church today than the issue of women serving as pastors/preachers. As a result, it is very important to not see this issue as men versus women. There are women who believe women should not serve as pastors and that the Bible places restrictions on the ministry of women, and there are men who believe women can serve as preachers and that there are no restrictions on women in ministry. This is not an issue of chauvinism or discrimination. It is… Continue

Church to burn Bible

CANTON, N.C. - A North Carolina pastor says his church plans to burn Bibles and books by Christian authors on Halloween to light a fire under true believers.

Pastor Marc Grizzard told Asheville TV station WLOS that the King James version of the Bible is the only one his small western North Carolina church follows. He says all other versions, such as the Living Bible, are "satanic" and "perversions" of God's word.

On Halloween night, Grizzard and the 14 members of the Amazing Grace… Continue

Are there prophets in the church today?

Answer: The gift of prophet seems to have been a temporary gift given by the Christ for the laying of the foundation of the church. Prophets were foundational to the church (Ephesians 2:20). The prophet proclaimed a message from the Lord to the early believers. Sometimes a prophet’s message was revelatory (new revelation and truth from God) and sometimes a prophet’s message was predictive (see Acts 11:28 and 21:10). The early Christians did not have the complete Bible. Some early Christians did… Continue

The Canon

The Canon

The term “canon” is used to describe the books that are divinely inspired and therefore belong in the Bible. The difficulty in determining the biblical canon is that the Bible does not give us a list of the books that belong in the Bible. Determining the canon was a process conducted first by Jewish rabbis and scholars and later by early Christians. Ultimately, it was God who decided what books belonged in the biblical canon. A book of Scripture belonged in the canon from the… Continue

Is Womanist theology winning the gender debate in most black churches? Part 2

Continued from Last Week

Like Feminist Theology, Womanist theology has at least two more scriptural problems. First is its belief that the scripture is sexist. As Sheron C. Patterson writes in her book entitled New Faith; "Face It: There is sexism in the Scriptures due to the cultural attitudes of the time. Passages that demand we submit, be silent, and refrain from teaching have been presented in a way to keep us toward the rear of the church leadership." (emphasis hers… Continue

Is Womanist theology winning the gender debate in most black churches? Part 1 of 3

I am a special education teacher at one of our nation’s top schools. One day an intern and I had a long conversation, as can be expected with such things we were verbally jousting about things along the lines of the economy, the state of black education and the state of the black family. When out of the blue…. Okay I may be expected this to come up just not this soon! It was of course the first time that we had taken the time to converse. She asked if I was a believer and what did I think of… Continue
