Scriptural Reference: Psalm 22:1 – 10

Sermon by: REV. DR. ROY KENNEDY FARLEY JR.

Introduction

We find David at such a low pivotal point in his life. A king of Israel, a man made

after God’s own heart, a young man whose faith in God led him to defeat Goliath, but yet

he finds himself in a moment of loneliness and despair. In this psalm David paints, with

his words, an exact portrait of what Jesus went through leading up to his death. Just like

Jesus, David feels forsaken (destitute) and abandoned. He’s calling on God, but no

response in return. Day & night he’s crying out hoping that God would do more than just

make sense of his dilemma, but to release him from the very trouble that’s causing him to

feel alone. Here we have a king, songwriter, shepherd, worshipper, and a praiser who has

reached a great level of loneliness. The question comes to mind “what has made David

stoop to a level where he feels that God is nowhere near the vicinity of his vanquishing

(proximity of his problem, apex of his agony, surrounding of his situation)?

Points of Interest from David: Why David feels he’s alone?

1) His attempt to dialogue with God becomes a lonely monologue v.2

2) He digresses (strays) from his position as a man v.6

3) He focuses on the reproach (scolding) of people v.6-8

Seeing that David is at a level of feeling that the appearance & the arrival of God is

absent, how can David resurrect my hope that God is with me even at a time where I feel

that he’s not? What can bring me to a place of assurance that God is sitting in the midst

of my mayhem?

Key Points to us: How can I feel confident that God is with me?

1) Don’t stop talking to God v.2

“A Word When You Feel Alone”

A) When I stop talking, I bring distance to the relationship (Luke 18:1; 1

Thessalonians 5:17; Luke 11:1)

B) Remind God for what He’s already done v.4-5

2) Never feel less than what God created you v.6

A) God made you for a reason v.6a (Gen. 1:26)

B) Don’t focus on what people say or do v.6-8 (Matt. 5:11-12)

3) Know that God sits in the midst of your dilemma v.3

A) Remind God of His position

B) His praises rests within His people

This reminds me of the verse that state...first the natural, than the spiritual. I believe that loneliness comes from our thinking of ourselves less than we ought, therefore we don't see ourselves as God sees us. I think that one of the key points that you penned is "When I stop talking, I bring distance to the relationship"...yes when I (we) stop speaking to God (or in the physical--man) we allow space and entrance to hear other voices that push further away for the voice and plan of God. The Word says that we are to pray (talk to) without ceasing...therefore talking to/with God should take us into a deep and rich intimate relationship with Him. Note that I wrote talking TO/WITH. Too often we talk to God, but not with Him. So we are not aware of how distance (alone) we truely are. Not because He has left/moved, but because we are not listening to know how really close He is in our (reproach, distress, confusion, etc.) situation.
