Dead in Adam or Alive in Christ, Part 3

Romans 5:17: “For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.”

Alive in Christ
The first man Adam disobeyed God and fell into sin. This resulted in his death which all of the human race inherited in him. The second Man Jesus Christ in complete obedience to God took upon Himself the sins of humanity. Consequently He partook of the death of humanity. By the power of God He was raised to life, accomplishing the redemptive work for the salvation of mankind. Through Him, God offers to mankind abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness so that all who receive Him will be made alive in life in Him. All who receive God’s abundant grace and gift of righteousness are delivered from the dominion of sin and death in Adam and are made to reign in life in Christ.

This amazing translation from death in Adam into life in Christ is described in Romans 5:18-19: “Yes, Adam's one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ's one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.” Jesus Himself states in John 5:24: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”

Every one who believes in Christ is brought from spiritual death in the old Adamic nature into spiritual life in Christ. You must appreciate this. No one can be dead and alive at the same time. One can be either dead or alive. You are either still dead in your sins in the old Adamic nature or alive in Christ. If you have received Christ, you have passed from death into life in Christ. You are alive in Christ and are no longer under the sway of the devil, the world, and the flesh like when you were spiritually dead in sin. We read in Ephesians 2:4-6: “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

Jesus Christ through His death and resurrection dealt effectively with sin and death in humanity that we can live in righteousness in Him. “For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:10-11). Paul testifies of this experience this way in Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” To be made alive in Christ is to live by the life of Christ in you instead of by the feeble resources of our human nature. It is to have Christ living in you.
