Chicago's Willow Creek Pastor Steve Wu Admits to 'Sexual Impurity' Resigns

Pastor Steve Wu, who headed the Chicago congregation of the evangelical Willow Creek Community Church has resigned from his pastoral position after "he admitted to sexual impurity," church officials said Tuesday night in a statement.
Willow Creek Chicago is one of the largest and most influential megachurches in the nation. Reverend Steve Wu led the Chicago regional campus, left his post last month. According to the Chicago Tribune, the congregation was informed of Wu's resignation on Jan. 25 during a Church service.

"He admitted to sexual impurity and has taken full responsibility for his sin," the statement said. No other specifics or details have been revealed by church officials.

What happens next with Wu is not clear either, but the statement said Wu "has expressed a desire to participate in a restoration process."

"We would ask you to pray diligently for Steve in these difficult days," the statement said. Wu, 43, began pastoring Willow Creek Chicago in 2006 with 22,500 attendees, according to a 2008 list of Outreach magazine. The Willow Creek megachurch community was founded by Bill Hybels and has six other locations in Illinois.

Todd Katter has agreed to serve as interim campus pastor while church officials search for the next campus pastor. Records of Wu have been removed from the church's website.
