True love is God’s kind of love. This is a love that protects, cherishes the person loved. It is agape love. Here is what the Bible says about true love:
"Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned."
~ Song of Solomon 8:7

There is a remedy for most diseases. There is a tonic that makes you younger. There is a heavenly substance that makes you more beautiful and more creative. There is a universal essence that creates within you the spirit of dedicated hard work and selfless giving. This life’s tonic and essence is true love.
“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” ~ 1 John 4:8

True Love or God's kind of love is an essential ingredient in any relationship. It should direct your dating, marriage, family and all your other relationships.

Here are a few characteristics of true love which is the Agape love – the kind of love that should direct all your thoughts, feelings and actions.

1. True Love is especially for Husband and Wife
This is the kind of love that should manifest in your marriage and family. It is the kind of love you should lay the foundation for during your dating, and marriage.

You are to love your spouse as Christ loves the church. How did Christ love the church? He gave Himself for it! It is in the same way you should love your spouse and your entire family.
You should give your self totally for your marriage and family.

True love cares for all. If you are to love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you and pray for them who persecute or use you despitefully, then you are expected to do far better for your loved ones. ~ Matthew 5:44

2. It is commanded.
Love your neighbor as your self. It is a compulsory love. Either you like it or not you must love other people with God’s kind of love.

This also shows it is a kind of love you manifest only when you know how to love your own self. You can never love your neighbor properly until you understand how to love your self. Where do you start from? Find out first who you are in Christ. Build your self image and self worth from God’s point of view. When you don’t know how to love your self, you will place little value upon your self.
Your life will mean little and the life of others would have no value in your eyes. It is lack of self respect and bad self image that leads to crime, sin and all kinds of immorality.
~Mark 12:29-31

3. It is your Greatest Possession.
This is your greatest possession in life. Whatever spiritual gift or material possession you have, without God’s kind of love you have become a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. ~ 1 Corinthians 13:1

4. It forgives a multitude of mistakes.
When someone does something wrong to you especially in a relationship, the first reaction is to cut the person off. Yet, God’s position is that you show more love to the person.
Why? The answer is simple. God’s love covers a multitude of sins. It covers countless faults and mistakes. If you are the type that likes to find faults in others then you will find it difficult to love God’s way. ~ 1 Peter 4:8
God is not counting people’s sins against them. He is rather reconciling people unto Himself.

5. It to love people no matter what.
God’s kind of love is a very strange one. It loves without counting. With Agape love, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you have done or fail to do. God loves you all the same. God loves you while you were still His enemy. Romans 5:10. Jesus died for you while you were still a sinner. ~ Romans 5:6-8.
God wants you to act now by loving people the same way.
This is a kind of love shown to a person who does not want to be loved. It is love for someone who doesn’t seem to deserve love because of what he or she is doing or saying. Agape is a kind of love which loves regardless of people’s actions.

You can learn more about the characteristics of God’s kind of love in the Bible. You need to live according to your Bible’s teaching. Let God’s love that is shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Spirit begin to guide your thoughts, actions and your talking.
