Lord Teach Us To Pray

Isaiah 66: 8

Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

Isaiah 66:1-2 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?

For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.   (Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:3)  Contrite: feeling or showing sorrow and remorse for a sin or shortcoming -a contrite criminal - a contrite apology

Our Father Which Art In Heaven

God, you are the one who created all men.  You are our father.  (Isa. 63:16) Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.  (Jeremiah 32:26-27 - Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?

Hallowed Be Thy Name

The word hallowed means, to render or pronounce Holy. God's name is essentially holy; and the meaning of this petition is, "Let thy name be celebrated, and venerated, and esteemed as holy everywhere, and receive of all men proper honours."  We give glory to God; it may be taken not as a petition, but as an adoration; as that, the Lord be magnified, or glorified, for God's holiness is the greatness and glory of all his perfections. We must begin our prayers with praising God for his holiness, and we must give Him glory before we expect to receive mercy and grace from him.

Thy Kingdom Come

The word kingdom here means reign. Mt 3:2. The petition is the expression of a wish that God may reign everywhere; that his laws may be obeyed; and especially that the gospel of Christ may be advanced everywhere, till the world shall be filled with his glory.  We pray “Let Your Kingdom come in me first, Lord God.”  For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, peace and joy in the holy ghost.

Therefore, Let Your Kingdom Come In Me and then In The World.  Let me walk in righteousness.  Let me follow peace with all men.  Let the joy of the Lord be my strength.

Thy Will Be Done, On Earth, As it is in Heaven

To pray that His will may be done on earth as it is in heaven, is to pray that His law, His revealed will, may be obeyed and loved. His law is perfectly obeyed in heaven, and His true children most ardently desire and pray that it may also be done on the earth. The object of these three first petitions is that God's name should be glorified, and His kingdom established; and by being placed first, we learn that His glory and kingdom are of more consequences than our wants, and that these should be first in our hearts and petitions before a throne of grace.  Let your will be done in me – as said in I Thesalonians 4:3 “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification that you should abstain from fornication.  That every one of you should know how to possess his VESSEL (his body) in sanctification and honor.”  I Thesalonians 5:18 says “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

Give us this day, etc. The word bread here denotes everything necessary to sustain life. (Matthew 4:4, Deut 8:3)  However, it is not just the bread that we eat, but the bread of life which is the word of God.  This petition implies our dependence on God for the supply of our needs and wants. We are dependent on him every day.   Job said in Job 23:12, “Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.” Therefore, we pray and agree with the word that “God is able to supply all of our needs according to his riches in glory.”  We agree with the word of God – that “The young lions do lack and suffer hunger but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.”  (Psalm 34:10)  We not only pray for ourselves, but we pray for our neighbor, we pray for the homeless, the sick and the feeble that God will supply them with their daily bread and provisions.

And Forgive Us Our Debts, As We Forgive Our Debtors

This passage is relational forgiveness (toward God and Man). Although our sins are forgiven, we don't stop sinning.  The bible says “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good and sinneth not.” (Eccleasiastes 7:20)  When we sin and will not repent of that sin, it affects our relationship with God. Here is where we remember any bad

feelings we have against someone and bring it to God to forgive that person.  We remember those who lied on us, talked about us, misused and abused us and here is where we forgive and ask God to forgive us.  If we do not repent and forgive others, we fail to honor the body of Jesus that was broken for our sins. It will ultimately affect our health and mysteriously we begin to experience multiple sicknesses. (I Corinthians 11:28-32)

But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. 30For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

We don't stop being God’s child, but we lose an intimacy, our communion is broken. The gospel brings judicial forgiveness. And our obedience, along with confession of sin, will bring the joy that comes from relational forgiveness.

Lead Us Not Into Temptation

I Corinthians 10:13 says “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” As the Spirit led Jesus in the wilderness to be tempted of the devil, we pray that God will not lead us into temptation.  (Matthew 4:1)  In (2 Peter 2:9) It says, “The Lord knoweth how to deliver [rhuomai] the godly out of temptations, [peirasmos] and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:”   The righteous may have many troubles but the Lord delivers them out of them all.  (Psalms 34:19)

But Deliver Us From Evil

The Apostle Paul was confident that God would deliver him: (2 Timothy 4:17-18) (NKJV) And he said, “But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear.

And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever.” Amen! Many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivers them out of them all.  (Psalm 34:19).  We can actually pray the scripture regarding our deliverance and agree with the word of God.  The book of Psalms are nothing but the PRAYERS OF DAVID.  You can recite them at any time in your prayer time.

We Must Pray For All Men, For Kings and For All That Are In Authority.  I Timothy 2:1-4

The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;  Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”  So here we see that our prayers should not just be about US, that we are to pray for others during our prayer time.  Supplication is the action of asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly "he fell to his knees in supplication"  Intercession is an interposing or pleading to God on behalf of another person.  For the bible tells us that we are a royal Priesthood (I Peter 2:9).  It was the Priest who went into the Tabernacle to offer up a sacrifice for the sins of the people.  We must realize that our purpose on earth is to be fruitful and multiply – and not just have natural children.  But we are to reproduce others who will fear and serve God.  We must help draw others to Christ and in doing so, we petition God for their forgiveness.  It is Not About Us, But It Is All About Jesus Christ and God’s desire to save mankind!

We should also pray in every place.  (I Timothy 2:8) says “I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.”   Pray for the United States of America, our President, the church (the body of Christ), pray for those you came in contact with during the week, pray for your family and especially those who live a riotous life of sin.  Pray for your children, and pray for Christians in other countries who are suffering persecution.

For Thine Is The Kingdom,  the Power, and the Glory

Here we begin to thank God for hearing our prayers.  We also begin to extol him by confessing that He is righteous and has all Power.  The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the revelation (revealed) of the Power of God!!  We vividly see the power of God through the resurrection.  In God there is life!  Praise God for his resurrection power.  If your life has been resurrected from sin and degradation, then it is a revelation of the Power of God!!  To God be the Kingdom!!  The Power!!  And all the Glory!!!  Forever, Amen!!  We always seal prayer in “Jesus Name.”

Thank you for taking the time to read and study this prayer material.  If for some reason you have lived a religious life but never really experienced a relationship with God through accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, I’d like to invite you to do so at this time.  The bible asks this question.   Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?  For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no for m nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.   He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.  Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.  And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.  Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.  He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.  I encourage you to Repent (turn away from your sins) and ask Jesus to come into your life.
