STICKS AND STONES
“Now while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day… So, as the Lord commanded Moses, all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him with stones, and he died.”
Numbers 15: 32; 36
Nobody follows directions anymore. Be honest—how many of you, when faced with assembling a piece of furniture you have bought, will try to put it together without thoroughly reading the directions first? Just as I thought—MOST of you!!
This past week my husband and I have been visiting Disneyland in Orlando. At several of the shows we saw, the attendants requested that the audience fill in the rows and not stop in the middle requiring the patrons following them to either stop or have to climb over them to get to the other seats. Do you think that made any impact on those who were bound and determined to do it their way? NO!!!! They disobeyed instructions and stopped where they pleased.
Thank God for Jesus!!! If it were not for His shed blood, we would be VERY concerned about sticks and stones. (Read the entire story in Numbers 15:32-36) We would be concerned because when you fall into the hands of an angry God, you leave yourself open to judgment and rebuke. (Romans 6:23)
I know the old adage that says “sticks and stones may hurt my bones…” MAY???? I don’t think so!!! Stones (disobedience) will KILL you!!!! Just ask the man in Numbers!! He will tell you just how lethal stones really are. But we have been given grace—grace to make mistakes—grace to be forgiven for our trespasses.
The next time someone gives you a directive—just do it. Let your conscience be your guide. Allow the Holy Spirit to work on your character and give you that determination to do the right thing just for the sake of doing the right thing!!! Don’t be like Numbers Man or Goliath and let a stone take you out because of your disobedience!! You are better than that!!
