INTERCESSORY PRAYER

THE PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Intercessory Prayer - The Biblical Foundation

The Biblical basis for the New Testament believer's ministry of intercessory prayer is our calling as priests unto God. The Word of God declares that we are a holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:4), a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), and a kingdom of priests (Revelation 1:5).

The background for understanding this calling to priestly intercession is found in the Old Testament example of the Levitical priesthood. The priest's responsibility was to stand before and between. He stood before God to minister to Him with sacrifices and offerings. The priests also stood between a righteous God and sinful man bringing them together at the place of the blood sacrifice.

Hebrews 7:11-19 explains the difference between the Old and New Testament ministries of the priest. The Old Testament Levitical priesthood was passed on from generation to generation through the descendants of the tribe of Levi. "The Melchizedek priesthood" spoken of in this passage, is the "new order" of spiritual priests of whom the Lord Jesus is the High Priest. It is passed on to us through His blood and our spiritual birth as new creatures in Christ.

WHO CAN GET INVOLVED IN THE PRAYER OF INTERCESSION?

THAT IS A PRAYER WHERE ONE’S HEART MUST BE RIGHT WITH IN THERE HEARTS, KNOW GOD, JESUS AND BE WILLING TO HEAD THE HOLY SPIRIT, AS WELL BE PREPARED TO STAND THROUGH MAY TESTS AND TRIALS.

Not appreciating the different types of prayer can hinder our prayer life. If you only recognize the prayer of faith you may fail to intercede for a child or friend who has gone astray or needs God to intervene in his or her life. Did you notice that Elijah had to keep praying seven times before the rain that God had already promised came (1 Kings 18:41-46).

WHAT EFFECTS DO THE PRAYER OF INTERCESSION HAVE?

INTERCESSION CAN HAVE MANY EFFECTS ON THE LIFE OF A PERSON OR PERSON AS WELL THE INDIVIDUAL BEING PRAYED FOR.  THERE ARE MANY VICTORIES RECEIVED THROUGH INTERCESSION AND BLESSINGS AS A RESULT OF THE INTERCESSOR.

EMPHASIZING THE POSITIVE AND THE NEGATIVE ASPECT OF THE TERM OR PHRASE.

What is the difference between the prayer of supplication and intercession?
Supplication means to petition or entreat someone for something. A passionate zeal and hunger fuels the prayer of supplication. Strictly speaking supplication is not just another type of prayer, but the attitude and state of our heart that accompanies prayer.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  Philippians 4:6 (KJV)

To intercede means to plead or mediate on behalf of another person. The scripture references above show specific circumstances where intercession was being made. Intercession will involve various degrees of supplication. Intercession is not normally a one-off prayer. It requires persistence (Luke 11:5-8; Luke 18:1-5).

Genesis 18: 22 - 33 (Abraham)  “QUESTIONS CONCERNING SODOM AND GORMORRAH”

(Elijah) 1 Kings 18: 41 - 46  THE ACCOUNT OF THE CLOUD THE SIZE OF A MAN’S HAND, BRINGING THE EVIDENCE OF RAIN, WHEN THERE WAS NOT ANY INDICATION OF RAIN IN THE SKY.

Jesus is interceding for us (Hebrews 7: 25)

Therefore he is able to save completely[a] those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

so is the Holy Spirit praying for us and through us as we pray in the spirit. (Romans 8: 26 - 27

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance  with the will of God.
