Doing Away With the Old Man
Romans 6:6-11

6. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin,
7. For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9. Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The old man represents our old nature and sinful state, which was without hope at first, but when we come to Christ Jesus, we then identify with his death, burial, and resurrection. Therefore, since the old man is crucified with him, he is dead and no longer under the power of sin and the slavery that it had us in.

It is not our sins (s.i.n.s) that send us to hell but our sin (s.i.n). Not the sins (s.i.n.s) of lying, stealing, back biting, robbery, adultery, fornication, murder, or cursing that sends us to hell. It is the sin (s.i.n) of rejecting Jesus as the only begotten son of God. Once we take care of that sin (S.i.n), then he takes care of everything else namely, our sins (s.i.n.s).
Freedom in death (vs. 6-11)

Romans 6:6 knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

In this text, we see these words, (that our old man is crucified). When a seed is planted in the earth, the whole body of that seed perishes. You see, every seed has two parts 1. The germ, which contains the rudiments and 2. The lobe, which is the body of the seed. The body dies that the germ may live just as Jesus, the King of all Kings, died that we may live with him. This word, when it is joined to the verb is crucified, means crucified as Christ was crucified. The body of sin, it means the body that is marked by sin. It is a massive lump of sin this is all sin that is called members. (Colossians 3:5) sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. In other words, sin is weakened more and more until it is destroyed; therefore, we are no longer a slave to sin anymore. This is a process that happens over a period.

Roman 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

He that is dead Paul says, when a man dies, he is exempt from the mastery and power of sin. Just as sin came into the world by one man, Adam, salvation came by one man, namely, Jesus. Freed from sin, Freed comes from the Greek word justified. We are free from sin and have been sanctified unto God. Before our conversion, we were subject to the mastery, of sin. Paul is not saying that we as Christians are perfect, but that our old master that had dominion over us has been broken, its power is gone and we are free, not from sin but the power there of.

Romans 6:8 now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

If we be dead with Christ: This gives us the picture of baptism. For we have been baptized into His death and are partaker of it. Therefore, since we have died with Him, we also because of faith in God now have been raised with Him, to the new life. We shall also live with him: just as death has no power over Christ, sin has no power over us who believe in His name as the only begotten Son of God.

Romans 6:9
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

He says knowing, this is what we all know. Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; we will never, ever die again. There is a song that we sing in the church, ‘I have died one time I don’t have to die no more’. Christ’ atonement for sin was sufficient, Jesus paid it all and all to Him we owe. Death hath no more dominion over him, it is like a bee without a stinger, it can buzz and fly but it cannot sting anymore because its stinger is gone. Death, the grave and sin, where is your power? When the stinger is gone, its power is gone.
Revelation 1:18 Hebrews 9:26-28

Romans 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

In that he died: Before Christ came, the death of animals was necessary by the shedding of blood. Only the priests could go into the temple of the Holy of Holly’s, at the mercy seat once a year to offer a sacrifice for the sins of his people. When Jesus came, temporary sacrifice stopped, for He is the eternal sacrifice whose blood covers all of our sin and sins. He died unto sin once: Once is one time only and never again. Therefore, in His death, it was the perfect death, burial, and resurrection. But in that he liveth: There is a song that we sing that says,
” because He lives, I can face tomorrow; because He lives all fear is gone. Because I know who holds the future and life is worth the living just because He lives”. Galatians 2:16

Romans 6:11
Likewise, reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Reckon ye also yourselves: Paul is not saying that baptism makes one saved, but one is free from sin as a ruler. This statement it offers evidence to the statement (Reckon ye also yourselves) but this is a request for us to live up to the idea of baptism. to be dead indeed unto sin: It shows us that, the controlling influence and power of sin over us, is no more.
But alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord: This is based on the perfect work that Jesus did on the cross with his death, burial, and of course his resurrection, so we should be rejoicing in this glory.

Points to Ponder:
1. How do we become alive in Christ?
2. How many times must Christ Die?
3. How are we free from sin?

Walk as a true soldier of God

To walk figuratively means, one's spiritual or moral journey. Spiritual walking is done through God's Word. For it is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path Ps 119: 105. When the word is allowed to live in us, the Holy Spirit will provide clear direction when to go, how to go and why to go. As people of destiny we must yield our hearts to the road God has set for us. Jesus Christ is the only one who knows the outcome of our travels.

As a moral journey, not only is walking with God a key factor, to walk with demonstrative power and anointing of what we preach is equally important. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit Galatians 5:25.

Remember Enoch? A devout man who walked with God. His total existence aligned with the will of God's plan for his life. He maintained such a holy life style, it is believed by the Jewish people, Enoch received special knowledge of divine secrets from God and therefore did not see death but was taken directly into heaven Genesis 5:22. People of promise walk with God, talk to God and listen to God.

Continue to stand in Jesus Christ!
