So Have You Heard Any Great Gospel Music Lately?

Something is has gone wrong within the African American Gospel Music arena. Let me preface my comments by saying that I love gospel music. At present my favorite artist/group is Israel & New Breed. I also enjoy gospel music across lines of color. What is my present concern? The lack of Christocentric focus, vague and inconsistent lyrical content, and arrangements that do not help to usher my mind and soul into a state of worship.

I love worship music that causes all who are present to want to worship; gospel music that is inviting. And yet, I never cease to be amazed at how so many choirs and/or praise teams do more performing (on Sunday morning/evening, mid-week, and revivals) then creating an atmosphere and thus opportunity for all to join in the worship of the Lord.

Let us not forget that worship is for an audience of ONE. Every praise leaders, soloist, director, ought to always invite and encourage the courage to join in and worship the Lord God together; to sing with one voice and worship with one heart. Gospel music is all about Him, it should 'NEVER' be about you.

I hope to challenge pastors and worship leaders to begin to introduce gospel music that is clearly directed towards the Lord God and doesn't, in anyway glorify man. I would also like to encourage those with the gift(s) for gospel music to write more and to incorporate more scripture into the lyrics. We all would be more blessed with songs that expressed more appreciation for the Lord God simply for who He is.

Also consider the arrangement. How can we who say that we who are called out to 'be' different, that is to walk, talk, live, differently, arrangement music that is designed for the worship of the Lord God and yet when we hear the instrumental we can't distinguish it from gospel or R&B. I should never have to listen to XM Gospel and when a song comes on, wonder "is that R. Kelly or Tonex?" The believer 'is' to demonstrate real distinction in all that we do.

Just thinking out loud.
