The Columbus Dispatch : Showing up, but not signing up

Today I read in an article printed in the Faith & Values section of the Columbus Dispatch, which briefly exaimed the issue of church attendance not converting into church membership. Parenthetically folk are not walking down the center aisle and "signing on the dotted line" .

The Coats Perspective Is:

Stop concentrating on membership and place your focus on attendance. Market to the core average church goer. Most of us make the mistake of designing our services either too contemporary or much too traditional, it's really not rocket science. Look at who you want your core church goer to be (Age/ Race/Income, etc..) and tailor you worship to your core target.

What is a core target? A core target is your most likely attendee. Do you know who your core is? If not, now is a good time to find out. A great misconception is that growth takes place outside of your core target not inside of it. Growth can take place outside of your core if your abilities are better tailored to another group outside of your core. But you should play into your core group's comforts and feed it to them like comfort foods.

In these rough economic times and even tougher times to come, now is when the rubber hits the road. Do you have, will you have what you need to compete against TV pimps and blessing sellers ?

As Always,Pray, Plan and Don't Negatively Manipulate the People.
