THREE ESSENTIALS FOR A CHRISTIAN HOME

TEACHING OF DR. ANTHONY YARDE ON FAMILY LIFE

This is seen, given when God brought the children of Israel out of Egypt and was preparing them for their new home.

A new generation of Israel is gathered on the plains of Moab
- To hear Moses review the law in preparation for their entrance into the Promised Land

Previous generation had died in unbelief in the wilderness

Moses begins his instruction by telling the people of Israel what a home is all about.

He sets forth three components which must be true if the home is rightly related to God:

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

1. There must be a revelation of God

God revealed three things about Himself:

(a) His eternality (Vs. 4) – Jehovah (Hebrew YHWH), The Eternal

In this verse, the word “hear” is important.
- The Jews refer to this as “Shema”.
- This word means “to hear” in a sense of obeying.
Moses is teaching not only the priority of belief in one God, but also a means to preserve that belief.

As time went on, the proper understanding of the Shema with its spiritual implications was no longer grasped by the people
- Zech 7:12-14; James 1:22-25

This absence of saving knowledge became a factor in their spiritual downfall
- Hosea 4:6

(b) God revealed His plurality
Elohim – plural of God
There are three persons in the Godhead

(c) God revealed His unity
- One Lord
- The three persons in the Godhead constitute One God
- Each is essential

2. If the home is going to be successful, there must be a response to God’s revelation

Vs. 5 – the response is to be a total response of love with all one’s being.
- Heart
- Soul
- Mind

This is the only fitting response to the eternal God who has revealed Himself.

3. There must be a three-fold responsibility

Vs. 6-9 – This three-fold responsibility acts as a check upon the proper response.

If the earthly father responds to God with love, he will be fulfilling his threefold responsibility.

The three-fold responsibility is

1. To have God’s truth govern your heart
There must be heart reality not mere external conformity or ceremony.

2. To have God’s truth govern the home
This is evidenced by the fact that the father teaches the truth of God’s revelation to his children by both formal – diligent teaching and informal instruction.

3. To have God’s truth govern his habits and conduct personally, privately and publicly.
