MARCH TO THE RIVER … with a Drum Major Instinct Series
One Voice One God
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. (Psalms 139:13-16)

Portrait of a Black Spirit-by Sandra Dukes
Dedicated to the founder of Black Awareness Day
Dorothy Benson
I have inherited a fortune--- that cannot be compared
For it rose from ancient earth and comets throughout the hemisphere
It is a legend- The Black Woman’s Treasure-This Golden Chest
Overflowing with the most precious jewels – robbed from Africa’s breast
Brutalized- Taunted – And Possessed
Taught to worship material things, forced to forget our men once were Kings
With nothing but the Lord-God on our side,
We have not faltered our spirits vividly alive
Descendants of Nefertiti, Sheba, Cleopatra, Aunt Jemima, and Annie Jean
Mother’s of struggle singing
“Pass Me Not Oh Gentle Savior, Hear My Humble Cry “
He Heard
Evolving silent screams into Fulfilled Dreams
Yes this legend is a bountiful treasure! Sensitive and Rare,
for I am of a soulful blackness; a classic beauty only my sisters share
And while sitting by a Carolina fire this wisdom came to me,
women of your ingredients inspire me to write poetry.
For we are who we are, a reflections of our pride
A Spiritual banner for our guide
Waving defiantly in the air, soaring beyond the skies
Proclaiming the unsung tale of how we
The Mother-Seed came from bondage to rise!

Inspire Me, Inspire Me to Be©
This poem was dedicated, published and performed at the June-teeth Ceremony a weeklong celebration at the Corpus Christi Convention Center, 1983. Since then this poem has evolved into yet *another poem that has crossed racial, gender and chronological lines and expresses the gratitude and appreciation for those who inspire others to embrace their gifts from God and each other.

The Color Purple (I’m here)
When I first heard Fantasia sing this song I was inspired. She sang it with such beauty and grace and you could tell that she really felt these lyrics.
