Does Doctrine really separate
The Church of Christ?

As I watched a very well respected pastor and world-renowned televangelist on this week, a very familiar statement was made as he taught on the love of God. The statement has become so common in our Christian circles that it has become an acceptable truth among the laity and clergy alike. What is the statement? Well, I am glad you ask! The statement is, "Let's not talk doctrine!" or try this one, "Doctrine is not important!" Is that so? When did discussing "Doctrine" become a taboo subject among a group of believers of a specific "Doctrine."

What does the word doctrine mean?

Doctrine: A body or system of teaching related to a particular subject; something that is taught; teachings collectively; a particular principle, position or policy taught or advocated, as a religion or government:

- Synonyms: Tenet, Dogma, Theory, and Belief.

If we say we should not talk about doctrine, we are saying let us not talk about the collective teachings of the Word of God. Lets not talk about the tenets of our beliefs? Is it really the teachings or the doctrine of Jesus Christ separating the church of Christ? I think not and my reasoning is Jesus Christ himself said, "…A house divided can not stand." (Mark 3:25) Therefore I do not subscribe to the "doctrine" that says, we do not need to discuss "doctrine" inside the Christian church that was built on belief in The Doctrine of the Lord Jesus Christ. In fact Jesus was crucified for His doctrine or for what He taught. In the Gosple according to Matthew 7:28 it says, "…the people were astonished at His doctrine." In the book of Mark 1:22 it states, "And they were astonished at His doctrine: for He taught them as one that had authority, and not as one of the scribes." Every where Jesus went He talked doctrine.

After the resurrection Jesus spent 40 days speaking to the Apostles concerning the Kingdom of God. Afterwards He sends them to Jerusalem to be filled with the Holy Ghost and to receive power to be witnesses of His doctrine. Now after they received the Holy Ghost in the upper room and it was heard by those on the outside what was going on and people did not have a proper understanding of what had happen, the bible says, "But Peter standing up with the eleven, lifted his voice and said unto them…" He begins to teach them the doctrine of faith in Jesus Christ. The doctrine included repentance to God, who is Jesus Christ. Baptism in the name of Jesus Christ is also included in this doctrine. Also, being filled with the Holy Ghost, which is the Spirit of Jesus Christ is part of this doctrine. Peter taught this doctrine in agreement with the other eleven apostles and they did not disagree with this teaching for they knew he received it from Jesus himself.

Acts 2:42 say, "…And they continued steadfastly in the Apostle Doctrine!" Now wait a minute!! If the apostle did not mind talking doctrine, why should we? In fact 2 Timothy 3:16 states, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for Doctrine…" Paul goes on to tell Timothy to "…exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound Doctrine." We cannot throw out or exclude ourselves from all the scripture. It's not the doctrine that is separating us; it's our organizational stands, church traditions and non-biblical standards. Yes, we (the church) sometimes put bondages (legalism) on the people in the name of God. That's true and it is wrong!! But the Word of the Lord is sure!! His yoke is easy and His burden light. Yes, it is light, but it's still a yoke.

No people it is not the Christ doctrine that separates us, it's our own doctrines. Come on people obey the doctrine!! The bible says in the book of Lohn 3:5, "...Except a man be born of water and Spirit, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Acts 2:38 says, "Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission your sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." This is the essential doctrine for biblical salvation and holiness without which no man shall see the Lord. Come on church lets all sit down and talk doctrine. God Bless!!

Well said and articulated my brother. It is time for the church to seek the old path and return to the sure foundation of holiness. I believe that doctrine is what separates us from the heretics. Although I am a trinitarian, I can appreciates your stance on doctrinal issues. I remember the time when both trinitarians and oneness brethren fellowshipped without one comporomising their beliefs to be around the other. Doctrine is the foundation of the faith and without it, all other opinions and issues are suspect.
Without a solid foundation in the basic doctrine then we will be weak in the faith and only looking for an emotional experience.I often ask when discussing some of the prominent ministers and clergy leaders " what do they really believe and what do they stand for. We have become a generation of spiritual co-dependents and have not matured ourselves on the sound doctrine or solid biblical teaching.
