PONTIUS PILATE The fifth Roman procurator of Judea, Samaria, and Idumea (26-36 A.D.) He was unwilling to condemn Jesus as a malefactor (John 18: 30, 38), and when he found out that Jesus was a Galilean, he tried to turn the case over to Herod, Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee, who was in Jeruslem at that time (Lluke 23:6-11). It was practice to release a prisoner on the Passover, and Pilate suggested taht Jesus be the one. The Jews refused (John 18:39, 40). Pilate then washed his hands as a sign that he was not taking the responsibility, although the continually allowed his soliders to strip and mock him (Matt 27:24-31). It was probably because he was an opportunist that he delivered Jesus over to be crucified (John 19:6-16). He was later summoned to Rome to answer charges against his administration, but Emperor Tiberius died before Pilate arrived
