Characteristics of Sound and Unsound Minds

APOSTLE ANTHONY YARDE TEACHING.

James 1: 2-8 demonstrates some characteristics of a sound mind:

1.Persons with sound minds do not react negatively in bad situations but count it all joy (verse 2).
- Joy is not an emotion, it is a state.
- It is a characteristic of who God is.
- Persons with sound minds know that God is in the midst of the trial so they let that part of God come to the fore and be activated

2. Know that the trials shape your character.
- God takes you through the process to bring our more of Him, not to hurt you.

3. Another state of a sound mind is wisdom.
- Unwise thoughts result in unwise action.
- Wisdom will help you to make the right decision in the storm but faith will keep you steadfast (verses 5-6)

4. Whenever you pray, believe you receive.
- You cannot receive if you doubt.

5. A double-minded man cannot serve God.
- He will either be hot or cold, there is not in-between.
- A double-minded man also hesitates and loses out.
- He is always in crisis because he does not know what he is supposed to do and when he should do it.

A double-minded man has an undisciplined mind
An undisciplined mind is an insane mind
An insane mind is an unproductive mind
An unproductive mind is a carnal mind
A carnal mind is an enemy to the spiritual mind of God.

God has given us a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7) that we know where to walk and what decisions to make.

People with unstable minds…
(i) carry inferiority complexes, low self-esteem and low self-confidence
(ii) wonder what other people think about them and seek the approval of others
(iii) are unbalanced and go from extreme to extreme
(iv) rebel against sound advice or waveringly follow the advice only so far
(v) lack faith, being only hearers but not doers of the word
(vi) will flow with everything that appeals to their consciences
(vii) are uncommitted and irresponsible
(viii) lack wisdom.
- The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom and the wisdom of God is seen in the decisions we make.
- We should not make decisions when we are frustrated, depressed or stressed out. At such times, the mind is not sound.
(ix) Always look back and compare what is with what was, for example, the Israelites in Exodus 14: 10-12 and Lot’s wife
(x) Will always wander away from the promises of God. Fear weakens them and they give in to the trials and temptations.

Some persons go back because the place where they were before did not call for character.
- There was no cost and they could do whatever they wanted.

People try to manipulate our minds and control us by using guilt, for example. If we are not thinking straight, we give in and make bad decisions.
