The question is: Why do we have a children's ministry?
"Having devoted more than two decades of my life and all of my professional skills to studying and working with ministries of all types, I am now convinced that the greatest hope for the local church lies in raising godly children." - George Barna

As a personal observation, I believe that if the pastor does not include the ministry to children as one of the top church priorities, the chance of that ministry reaching its potential and having a significant impact on the lives of the children is severely reduced.
Right! Brother Pierce hit it with his post. The reverence to Deut 6:6-7. Children's ministries are important because the parents have failed in their duties to teach their children. That duty has been given over to the church "ministry".

It is the same with all family unity and structure. For example we have all read on these boards how a wife is to submit to their husbands and learn from them, and how husbands are to love their wives and to give themselves up for their wives, like Christ did for His church. But, who is the acknowledged leader and teacher of the families today? It is not the husband and father or even a strong-willed wife. The final authority within the family today rests with the pastor and/or the "first lady" of the local church.

The church is out of order.

We have children's ministries for the same reason we have all of the other church "ministries" that were unheard of in historical scripture, i.e., too often it is the church leadership its self that is contributing to the growing problem of the destruction of our families. At one time, ministry to (and within) the body of Christ was conducted by, and was the responsibility of, all the individual members of the assembly, including teaching, counseling, and the exercise of all of the gifts of the Spirit for the building up of that body. Where it use to be the people who made the church a viable body that met is so-n-so's house, or the church at this or that city, it has become Pastor's X's church.

Each pastor has his/her own way of doing things and their own belief system that they impose on their assembly. Need a little evidence of this? First look at the number of denominations and independent churches in your area. In some cities we have churches affiliated in the same ministerial organization who will not even fellowship with one another - be3cause of a pastoral decree.

The illness within the church runs deep and the results are that a growing number of churches are becoming (have become) nothing more than social clubs, business fellowship meetings, etc., or even worse, religious cults where men have been given preeminence over Jesus Christ. In most of these settings, if and when Jesus actually shows up, it will be more as an honored guest rather than as the master of the house.

Alright, I know I have come down rather hard on the current church structure. But, my dear friends - before the days of world-wide communication, sound systems and mass transit, the church "turned the world upside down". But, not today! Today, when folks drive by a big church they seldom even notice it, or if they do it is to note how wonderful it looks. But, it is a beautiful sepulcher, full of dead men's bones and those who are waiting to die. Why? Because these buildings are filled with unconscious Christians (that is, the actual church) who are dieing from spiritual malnourishment and a lack of exercise.

Is there a doctor in the house?
Deut 6:6-7,"And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."

Children's ministry is so important. We want to raise a generation of God fearers, and people who obey Him and love Him.
Thank you! Truly!
I agree!!!
My blog is a compilation of thoughts and ideas on children's ministry and leadership. http://ricardomiller.com/content.cfm?id=151
Children Ministry is the foundation for our children, once they are rooted in the word of God their life will take on a different meaning, Isaiah 54:13 says all thy children should be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of tihy children.
