First of all, drinking and/or smoking are not sins, except to those who desire them to be. For those people, a sin is anything they choose to be sin. Also, we should remember that anything that is not done in faith is classified as a sin. Not withstanding, adultery and fornication are biblically defined transgressions of the Law, which are in turn, defined as sin in 1 John 3:4.

While a congregation may agree that no one should drink, smoke, play cards, drink anything with caffeine in it, etc., as standards/requirements for membership and/or ministry, those rules are valid only for that congregation, group or organization, and are not valid or biblically required for the rest of the body of Christ. Failure in biblically required moral standards, however, require congregational correction (1 & 2ed Cor.).. The offender should be removed (suspended) from office until they are 'restored' to fellowship. If the offender cannot or will not take correction/reproof, and is not restored to the fellowship, then they are to be excluded from the fellowship.
then should we allow our 5 yr olds, or 12 yr olds to drink wine and beer and smoke. legally you can give beer to your children and cigarettes if there with you doing it. so is it ok then?.. i asked some preachers the same ? and they said no because its not right for them but adults it is. but the law says they can if you give it to them at your own home under your supervision. its funny to me how alot of people use the bible in some areas and not others. yet the bible says in timothy we should have a good repore with this in the church and outside the church(non-christians). if you ask any regular person on the street they almost always say that such pracitices are sinfull for a church person. so we must keep our testimony in there presence. its funny how drinking smoking, playin cards, are considered sinfull in the church, yet gossip, hatred, lieing, rebellion, division, etc. are accepted and tolerated. how sad, how sad CHRIST must say when he sees the condition of the church. like the good word says many are called but few are choosen, the harvest is ripe, and the laborers are few. what type of christian or laborer are you.
once again thank you brother Bowman for you insight its much appreciated. always looked forward to your responses. GOD BLESS and have a great week.

Proverbs 20:1 (KJV):
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Proverbs 20:1 (AMP):
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a riotous brawler, and whoever errs or reels because of it is not wise.

Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Gal 6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

1 Cor 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1 Cor 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Now, this is the Word of God, scriptures to show how we should present ourselves, keep our bodies. But the most significant Word of God is BE YE HOLY FOR I AM HOLY. Then you ask yourself, what is HOLY. Yes, we all have sinned and come short according to the Word of God, BUT, Psalm 107:20 tells us that HE SENT HIS WORD AND HEALED THEM FROM ALL THEIR DESTRUCTIONS. Now that Word is Jesus, which was with God in the beginning and when we accept Christ, we know that HE has power to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness, not some things, but ALL things. How can we say God has power and make Him weak when it comes to our weakness of the flesh. This is why the road is WIDE....lets continue to pray that God gives us the knowledge to do RIGHT and turn away from our own wickedness. He has promised He would if we OBEY....OBEY....OBEY....Obedience is the key. Lord have mercy on me and ALL.

In Love, Sis. Denise
that was a great post. very simple but solid with scripture. although some might not agree with what you have said, the key is scripture. scripture is what sets the captive and mind free. so in short, you words were very well choosen to reach and teach a lost generation. GOD BLESS,

"But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat." [1 Cor 5:11]

Here's where we use some sanctified common sense. If the biblical instruction is to avoid company with a brother walking disorderly, then by extension we shouldn't allow this disorderly brother to continue to preach under our organizational credentials. This is the one and only way we stop someone from preaching... we stop them from preaching as a member in good standing with our church.

The priest Eli was stricken dead by God because he did not sanctify the office. and but instead kept his wicked sons in the position although they had disqualified themselves by their behavior [1 Sam 3:13]. People in authority over sinful preachers, who do not chastise them, will be held responsible, like Eli was.
question to think about then if we say that drinkers or smoker's should not preach any more and we say it is a sin then we who all sin that are preachers should stop preaching.
Of course, many preachers who backslide do not acknowledge their fall from grace. I could cite some outrageous examples of preachers trying to rationalize away their adultery, thievery, intoxication, etc. But in principle, I would say that any preacher who is aware of having fallen into a pattern of sin should stop preaching of his own accord.

I notice, though, that your comment focused specifically on drinkers and smokers (leaving aside the adulterers that were also referred to in the original post). Perhaps you don't consider the consumption of alcohol and the use of tobacco to be sinful behavior. These points are debated in the religious circles. Great personages in the Christian faith, like author C.S. Lewis, were drinkers and smokers. I wouldn't presume to tell an Anglican priest or a Baptist minister that he should stop preaching because he smokes or drinks. But as my denomination holds that such pursuits do not represent holiness, I do think we have to tell credential-holders in our organization that if they are drinking or smoking, they are being openly rebellious, and they should either repent or relinquish their credentials.
notice i said we who all sin that are preacher's should stop preaching if i am correct we have all sinned and and come short of his GLORY.it is not the sin that god uses it is the person that he uses to get the GLORY that he deserves.i have messed up at times but does not mean that i should stop preaching, and if you are a preacher and you say that you have not sinned then you have decieved yourself and you should step down from the pulpit.i am in no way condoning sin in the pulpit, that is why i love grace and mercy from GOD and not man.
1Cr 1:21 KJV - For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
Preaching is about salvation. It is to reach the lost and encourage the saints to hold on. If the word of God is not what the preacher is preaching, that should be the first consideration.

1Cr 2:14 KJV - But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.
Each individual is different. Some will receive the word, others won't. God will give some over to a reprobate mind and all the talking in the world won't help.

Gal 6:1 KJV - Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
Anything that is done must be done in love. Not malice, not out of self righteousness, not out of tradition (see also Mark 7).

Pro 17:9 KJV - He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth [very] friends.
Pro 10:12 KJV - Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.
What ever corrective measures are taken, should be tactful and not so public. Souls are at stake and those who are not aware of what the preacher is doing need to be considered. We don't want innocent blood spilled. How many times have people left the church because of the way church folk act??? How many churches go after those souls? Some may never be redeemed and someone has to pay for that.

Rom 8:30 KJV - Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
Did God qualify the person? If God does the qualifying, who are we to disqualify? Are we saying that God didn't know that this person would be doing things contrary to His word?

I live by the scriptures Sis. Denise quoted: I Corinthians 6:19,20, & Romans 12:2, 11. I also realize that not all who call themselves Christians do the same. We spend a lot of time trying to judge right and wrong, administering our own form of justice. My daily prayer is: "When you spend time criticizing, you are not spending time loving, so Lord hide from me the faults of others so that I may see my own."

Your quandary raises more questions than can be answered with a straight yes or no. God has to lead.
