Does our hairstyle matter to God- MEN with ponytails and WOMEN with shaved heads???

Recently, I saw a MAN on the pulpit singing at a renowned Bishops' church in California. I noticed the MAN had a ponytail and I thought it was WRONG for a MAN to wear a ponytail. Also, there are too many women wearing their hair shaved or really close like a man and that is not scripture either. Do you think Men should look like Men in church and Women should look like Women - and can you back this up with doctrine. Jesus did not have long hair as HE is portrayed in movies nor did HE have dreadlocks!

Hey sister, how are you? There's actually nothing wrong with men having long hair. Hebrews of the OT had dreadlocks, and long hair, and so did the hebrews of Jesus' time.

The movies actually dunno how Jesus look, or how his hair was. But from research, Jesus' hair was most likely jet black, and his hair was probably shoulder length.

Samson had dreadlocks, Solomon had dreadlocks, Many tribe leaders of the OT had dreadlocks, etc. Its ok for men to have locks, and long hair.
are you sure about what your saying me personally i dont think it looks good for a man to have long hair
Hey sister,

Thats fine, if you do not think its good for a man to have long hair, then you are not in the wrong. But, its also not in the wrong for a man to have long hair. As we know in scripture, Solomon, Samson, Nazarites, and many tribe leaders had long hair.

Paul wrote and said men should not wear long hair, but the situation he was in called for it. It was not saying it was overall wrong for men to wear it.

God bless
Hi!

When the bible says something, we must believe it simply and stop reasoning:

Before, writing the message below to Corinthians and to us, brother Paul knew all the practices prevailing in the Old Testament:

This is what the Bible truly says!

“Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice - nor do the churches of God”.

1 Corinthians 11:14-16

Germain,

It is imperative that one knows the historical backgrounds of the holy scriptures. The bible is an ancient book, and in order to understand what the writers meant, we must understand, in many places, their own culture.

Many Christians tend to rely 100% on what the scripture "reads". But, is that what the scripture "means"?

The Lord says come and let us REASON together. Peter said to always be ready to give a defense for the hope that is in you.

We as Christians should reason the scriptures. Here's a statistic.. Over 50% of Christians do not know the history of their own faith. It is also true that most of them cannot explain, in detail, what they believe.

So, a person who would say," I believe only what the bible reads", probably cannot explain in detail whats truly been said. Thats just my opinion there.

But, Germain, you cannot just go by what the bible is reading, because it was written in a time way before our births!

Now, I know you will disagree with me on this anyways, but I thought it not robbery to tell you that since the bible, and its writings are between 2000-4500 yrs old, we must study their culture, history, and customs to get a grasp of their way of life. By doing that, the meaning of the scriptures could truly open up to us.

God bless
Sister Ivy, you do nothing, because it isnt sin if you have short hair. What Paul said there deals mainly with the place he was in.... its historical context. Its ok if you do not have long hair. Just live a repentant life, and obey the Lord commandments, and you're good to go!

God bless,
James
Good question. Again, it happens to deal with the historical background of it. Paul is not saying to women of all centuries to keep your hair long.

A woman with cancer, and has all her hair fall out... Thats a circumstance, for which she has not sinned. But, even when woman who willfully cut their hairs shorts, they have not sinned at all.
That is soo true sister lol
Hi!

"For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths."

2 Timothy 4:3-4

Brother Paul was truly a bonafide Prophet of God!!! His prophecy is fulfilled!!

I will be honest with you on this one. Scripture is only clear to the early church of converted Jews and Gentiles concerning hairstyle (and primarily women having long hair as is the custom of middle eastern cultures). Concerning many African-Americans, it cannot adequately apply because our hair is not always naturally long and in most African cultures, women's hair is not much higher than a typical black male's taper fade haircut). It has nothing to do with culture, just genetics.

One must also remember that blacks by nature are creatures of culture (in other words, we adapt to the culture we are in much more than any other culture or race). We have generationally (in the west) allowed contemporary trends dictate or hairstyles. Thats from the pulpit to the pew. God does not see hair length, he sees faith. And as the brother stated earlier in the thread, within historical and cultural contexts at the time of the writing of the scripture, women with exceptionally long hair were considered harlots and men with long hair were considered to have taken a Nazarite vow to not cut their hair. Hope that helps. Blessings.
