I keep reading all these discussions and questions for discussion keep poping up in my head. The title says it all I want to hear from you. What do you say?

You receive the Holy Spirit when you repent of your sins, and turn to the Lord God in obedience through Jesus Christ.
Ok so to play devils advocate why is that some believe that after you recieve Christ, you must "tarry" for the Holy Spirit?
They lack basic biblical knowledge to understand the salvational process.
Luke 24:49 -- Tarry.... to sit down; to sojourn or to settle down; The same word is used in Mark 14:32 where Jesus asked His disciples to sit while he went to pray.

Interestingly enough.... was anyone asked to "tarry" for the Holy Spirit any other time than Luke 24:49?

What was significant from that incident from the others is found in John 14:16. And I will pray the Father and He will send you another Comforter that He may abide with you forever.

Jesus didn't pray for a "different" but "another" --- a parakletos.... the same as and MORE THAN a just a Comforter. but the original word is another parakletos.

Simple example.... If I tell you to go wait in a room for someone to arrive but they can't come to you unless I leave and when they come they will abide forever, then why would you tell others to wait for the One who is already here and abiding forever? Where is the biblical reference for another or many other upper room experiences?
Was that a question directed to me?
The question was for whomever wants to answer it.

It reminds me of people who do everything they can possibly think of doing to be saved when God's word just says BELIEVE. LOL

John 3:16 for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever BELIEVES on Him would not perish but have everlasting life.

We create so many formalities for salvation that it is ridiculous
We do the same with the Holy Spirit

ESPECIALLY when it comes to the "evidence of speaking in tongues". But that is a whole other topic. (don't thing I am opposed to it, it's just that people quote a scripture out of context and have NO IDEA what they are talking about)
There is much truth in what you said my friend.

John 16:7-9
7"But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Remember the original word is parakletos) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

8 "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me

Some say you can't be saved WITHOUT the Holy Spirit according to the passage above. This is an interesting passage because men and women and children were baptized by John BEFORE this statement. So for some there is confusion between salvation, baptism and being "baptized" in the Holy Spirit and the subsequent power of the indwelling Spirit.

But it is not as complicated as we make it out to be. The Holy Spirit has been "at work" since Genesis

Genesis 1:1-2
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. ]

Exodus 31:1-3 (oh just read the whole chapter)
1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2 See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah:
3 And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,

The Holy Spirit has always been at work inside, outside and around mankind!

Man can't even understand the things of God without the Spirit of God which is further supported in the New Testatment:

1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

1 Corinthians 2:9-11
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

So why the "tarrying" in the book of Acts?

The disciples had been personally shephered by the Son of God. The LIVING word of God. The word became flesh and dwelt among men. Oh how effective this was! Divine parenting of little eagles that were about to be kicked out of the nest and REQUIRED to replicate the process... Go ye therefore....

The disciples were not kicked out of the nest without being given EVERYTHING they needed and then some. They were given ANOTHER Parakletos... they were NEVER alone. Empowered with confidence of this fact that they were never left alone.

Like my brother mentioned earlier, they already had the "seal" of the Holy Spirit the moment they believed. The power of the Holy Spirit was not a power for casting out demons and healing the sick etc. These things were done by Believers BEFORE the upper room experience. Remember the 70 who went out??? (Although some of the disciples couldn't do it because of their unbelief)

But the "power" is plainly described in the following passages:

Acts 1:8
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 4:33
And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

Revelation 11:3
And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth

The power that people attribute to tarrying for the Holy Spirit was given to the disciples BEFORE the upper room:

Matthew 10
1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Some believers are so busy being super spiritual and spooky that they forget the simplicity of the gospel and forget to be WITNESSES. They are hungry for power and position and forget that their purpose is to be fruitful... meaning.. multiply... go ye therefore... make disciples... etc.

Then they keep people in bondage by telling them they don't have the Holy Spirit because they haven't tarried and/or haven't spoken in tongues. *sigh*

WoW! That was pretty deep, I never in all of my times reading Matthew noticed that it said that in ch. 10 thanks!
well the bible says after you have confesed jesus as your lord and savior. then you sanctify yourself, in a few days god will come in and sanctify you holy.

and lets not get these confused. the holy spirit can fall on anyone at any given time. that is the fulfillment of the prophecy that god rains on the just as well as the unjust. but the holy ghost is a keeper and that will sustain you. the devil can do everything a person filled with the holyghost can except live holy. and i am 13.
Ok, Where does the bible say:

"after you have confesed jesus as your lord and savior. then you sanctify yourself, in a few days god will come in and sanctify you holy."
Just so you know pretty much everything you have said in the post I agree with I started this discussion because I like to see what is out there, what are people being taught. And I'm truly surprised I havent got someone on here talking about having to tarry for the Holy Ghost.
Rev Culberson, you'd be surprised at how many people still believe they should not get up from the altar until they have completed the "tarrying" process.

I remember when I was a teen in the COGIC church (nothing against them.. just relating my experience.) people yelling at me and speaking in tongues all around me and moving me around and all this high emotionalism around me. I began to just say whatever just so they would leave me stop yellin at me. And laughin within when I would hear a Sister say, “She got it!!!” LOL really? Is THIS the Holy Spirit… fakin and shakin – this is what I wondered to myself and it actually trained me to fake and shake for many years on other things just so I could appear as a Christian. Many others have confessed this same experience to me.

It was later in my adult years that in all their wisdom, I got an UNDERSTANDING of the word of God and the Spirit of God... by simply.. READING God's word. LOL

I got tired of the GREAT DEBATE of speaking in tongues vs not speaking in tongues, speaking in an earthly language vs speaking in a heavenly language, belief in God’s word vs emotion experience alone... there was so much division (and still is) that it sickened me (and still does).

I'd heard all these stories of people who made up a language just so they could say they spoke in an "unknown" tongue and therefore feel they are more spiritual and closer to God than a person who may have never spoken in an unknown tongue yet that person’s life is completely surrendered to God with evidence of faithful works and the fruit of the Spirit.

Here's an excerpt from an article I read recently:

What we are commanded to seek after salvation is the filling of the Holy Ghost; not the baptism with the Holy Ghost (an event in Acts); not the baptism by the Spirit (an invisible event occurring at the time of salvation); not the indwelling of the Spirit (a gift given to every saved person).

The filling of the Spirit does not give us any more of the Spirit. In fact, a Christian cannot have any more of the Spirit than he or she already has. But the Holy Spirit can have more of us. That is the filling of the Holy Ghost.

Consider your life as a house with many rooms. When you got saved, the Holy Spirit came to dwell in your house and He will never leave you. You can never have more of Him than you do now. However, you can lock up certain rooms of your life and keep the Holy Ghost out of them. In Ephesians 5:18, we are commanded, "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit." Just as a drunkard surrenders himself to the influence of alcohol (he is said to be "under the influence"), so we are to surrender ourselves entirely to the influence of the Spirit of God. We are to be under His influence. We are to open every room of our life to Him and let Him have full control of our lives. This is what we are to seek from the Lord--not tarrying for the baptism with the Holy Ghost.

I thought this was well said when I read it. And I would add that the evidence of the Spirit will be a changed life... and a progressively changing life as you surrender your will in different areas of your life to the leading and influence of the Holy Spirit. Will you speak in tongues.. sure that’s available to you as well… but wouldn’t you rather have a changed life and an intimate relationship with the Lord than only a heavenly language and jacked a jacked up mind living however you want to live?
