Over the years, I have heard many men and women in the holiness denominations say that women shouldn't wear pants in the church.

Were is the scripture to support the ideology that women shouldn't wear pants? If it is in scripture then I would have to ask why are men wearing pants? Did men wear pants in biblical times or did their wear something that covered their loins and then long robe like attire? I mean isn't that what you depict in your biblical plays? So why aren't the men being asked to wear similar apparel in the church to maintain a outward appearance of holiness? Why aren't they asked to not cut their hair (both facial and head)

What are the clothing designations for men in the holiness denominations.

After all, without holiness NO man/woman shall see God.....

When I started out in Holiness I was never told not to wear pants. I wore dresses to church from my formal upbringing, but for a little while I wore my pants and shorts out of church and sometimes they were a little too tight. But as time went on and I began to grow in my RELATIONSHIP with the Lord I would get under condemnation in my tight pants or shorts and even some revealing dresses and not because someone was condemning me but personally I became uncomfortable with the way I was looking. So I personally decided to stop wearing pants, shorts, revealing dresses because it was bothering me personally. Today I still don't wear pants because they don't compliment me and I don't compliment them. I do not condemn others who wear them and there is a way to be modest in our wearing of clothes. I do not make a doctrine out of it but I do promote HOLINESS.

Matthew 23:27-28  (NIV)27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

It would be a horrible thing for the Lord to say to me, “You are like whitewashed tombs.” Jesus defines what he means by this description. A whitewashed tomb looks good on the outside but within is full of dead men’s bones.

Christians spend too much effort worrying over cleaning up the outside, but as you illuded to in your excellent post when one cleans up the inside the outside can't help but line up with what is in the inside of us.  It's what's inside us that counts, what's inside (whether it be negative or postitive) will always take root and reflect on the outside. 

Jesus compares the scribes and Pharisees to this kind of behavior by saying, “You are like whitewashed tombs.” He says they look good on the outside but inside are full of iniquity and hypocrisy. They dress in the robes of the clergy and have the appearance of righteous men, but they do not act and behave like people of God. A good example of what he was showing here can be seen in Mark 12:38-40. “Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and to have salutations in the market places and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at feasts, who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

We should study the word of God deligently, get a clear understanding of his word and learn to concern ourselves with that which really pleases God and brings us closer to Him spiritually.

I agree with you some in the church are like the Pharisees and Jesus did condemn them for that hypocrisy as well as warned them how could they escape the fires of hell. What we are discussing about the women wearing pants in church is different, and we are not being judgmental of them for doing so. My wife wears pants to church, and I do not condemn her for doing so. We just have to concern ourselves about the weaker brother. Jesus did not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners. We must accept people as they are, and as they grow in their faith, they will decide what type of clothing is proper to wear to church. We must love the sinner, but hate the sin. Only then can we truly accept people as they are.

Sister LaGrady, I can relate to your testimony and as we grow in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ we change our perspective about how others dress. Holiness is an attitude of the heart, and as we allow the Holy Spirit to control us we are able to make decisions about clothing to the glory of God. I  am not going to judge anyone by the clothes they wear. Man looks on the outside, but God looks at the heart. I pray that we will be able not to look at the people by the way they dress, but rather what is in the content of their heart. I pray that we will provoke one another to love, and good works as we see the day of Christ approaching. Let us not argue about what type of clothing to wear, and instead how we will care for the poor, and the needy.  Pure religion is to care for the widows, and the fatherless, as well as to keep ourselves untangled by this world. The passage deals with "cross-dressers", women and men trying to disguise their gender. In our day, pants and shorts are clothing for both men and women. There is no disguising what gender you are based on wearing pants or shorts. Besides, consider this, there were no pants in Bible days—that is strictly a modern dress style. The men in Bible days wore garments called tunics that looked like dresses. Does this mean that men should wear the same "dress-like" garments that Jesus and others wore?  Audrey Gaddis  wrote this and I agree with her assessment of the issue of women wearing pants in the church.

I thank you Janet for your comments, and they are correct regarding bible days attire. Today we are under grace, and we are not subject to the dress codes of the Torah. Paul said in Roman 14 let every man be persuaded in his own  mind. We should be mindful of the weaker believer who may be offended at how we dress. We are at liberty in Christ Jesus, but we are not to use our liberty as a cloak of stumbling.

I have never known a cross-dresser (and yes--I know alot of them--lol) that was hiding thier true gender--they always were truthful aboyt what and who they are.  Give me a H(e)ll F(u)ck Yeah!  Brothers and Sistas. There is so much fighting on what Women should wear that some of us have lost our focus; our focus should be God the reason so many Man and Women have a problem with Women wearing  pants is because of the Woman body shape. allot of Women & Men will argue that they have no problem with others Women wearing pants is not the problem it's people spirit. modesty and Holiness is a must and has nothing to do with wearing pants. there are Holy Women wear pant and unholy Women wear pants. in my closing there is nothing wrong with Godly Women wearing pants i wear pants but wear in Holiness & Respectfully. Deuteronomy 22:5, clearly states, "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God."

The Bible never said anything about not wearing pants. It said women should not wear men's clothing, and vice versa; and plenty of men were walking around in skirts and dresses back then.

All this "holiness" stuff is about outer appearances and I believe God is more concerned with our heads and our hearts.

I have a niece that forces her daughters to wear dresses to church and all that's going to do is make them NOT wear dresses when they get old enough to choose for themselves.

Too many women out there wearing dresses to church and still ain't holy, and too many men out here that should be wearing dresses because no one can tell the difference any more.

Besides, that wasn't something God said -- that was something the Apostle Paul said.

We thank you for your comments, and you are correct that wearing the right kind of clothes to church does not make you holy. Holiness comes from being set apart by God. Man looks on the outside, but God looks at the heart. When the heart is right with God, the by product will be a holy life that is pleasing to God. Let this mind be in you, which was in Christ Jesus who thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation. Yet humbled Himself to death on a cross. God has exalted Him, and given Him a name that is above every name, that every eye shall see, and every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that He is Lord to the glory of God.  Just let Jesus live in you, and produce that mind of Christ. As we live for Him, others will see Jesus in us, and the holiness that comes with being set apart to do His will in our lives.
