Jesus stated 2 "great" commandments. These commandments were the greatest among all the other commandments. Why? Because the whole law hangs on these two laws. The first commandment about loving God with all your being is mentioned in Duet 6:5, and the commandment about loving your neighbor as yourself is mentioned in Lev 19:18. These 2 commandments are not new commandments, rather, these 2 commandments is what the law and Prophets hang on.

Some say that these are the only laws that we are to adhere to under the New Testament, but that's a misunderstanding. Notice that Jesus tells us that the law and the Prophets hang on these 2 laws. Most Christians really do not know what that means. If the laws hang on these 2 laws, than logically, that means that in order to carry out these 2 laws, we must actually keep the whole Torah. When we keep the whole Torah. we are loving God with all our being, and we are loving our neighbor as ourself.

The argument from institution of commandments is severly flawed. One cannot logically say,"Well, since Jesus does not mention the Sabbath, then that means we do not have to follow it." That's flawed. This comes from the lack of understanding of the audience of the four Gospels. It is a fact that Jesus was speaking to Jewish people. These people knew Torah, and they followed it. Jesus did not have to actually mention obedience to the Sabbath.. why? Because they all followed it! Not only that, the only time they could hear the law being taught was on the sabbath! If you want to argue from the argument of institution, then Jesus did not mention, or instituted Beastiality, and witchcraft, and things pertaining to those natures. Does that mean we are allowed to do those very practices? Of course not. So, that argument does not hold water.

It is true that Jesus is Lord of the sabbath, but that does not mean he ruled out the Sabbath. he himself kept the sabbath. Those 2 commandments Jesus gave are the realization of the law and the Prophets. In other words, when you carry out the whole law, then you are fulfilling the 2 greatest commandments. Take heed to what Paul says:

Romans 3:31,"Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law."
