There is a commonly believed that King David danced out of his clothes at the lead of the procession returning the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. This misconception probably stems from his wife Michel's own description of the event. She greeted her husband with this sarcasm: "How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaidens of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!" [2 Sam. 6:20b, KJV]

Some bible readers have (perhaps unwittingly) adopted Michel's perspective of the event, without looking to the full description of it in the narrative. Just because scripture accurately quotes Michel doesn't mean her words were truthful! 2 Samuel 6 says: "And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod." Moreover, 1 Chronicles 15:27 says: "And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen... David also had upon him an ephod of linen."An ephod was a close-fitting, armless outer vest; it was designed by God to be worn over an ornate blue robe, hemmed with designs of pomegranates and little bells [Exod. 28:33,34]. In Old Testament times the robe and the ephod were used almost exclusively as priestly garments and worn in connection with the worship of God.

Michal's sense of dignity was offended when David appeared before the people without his kingly attire, but he was not disrobed dancing before the Lord: he was dressed for worship.

however he did not allow his clothes to confine his praise to God, a king as Michal was speaking, should always have the appearance of a king. For maidens to see their king in a tight fitting all over ephod, was not for the young maiden's eyes. But David was focused on his victory for God,

It reminds me of the criticism our First Lady recieves for sleeveless apparel and shorter skirts, when one has knowledge of who they are, they are not concerned with what others think
