Intense Moments

In the Jordan, Jesus Christ was anointed by the Holy Spirit and approved by the Father. In the desert, he appeared abandoned by both. Every trace of God was swept away by the wind or buried by the sand. There was no affirming voice. There was no attesting sign.

All Jesus Christ heard from heaven was the hollow whistling of the wind. All he saw when he looked up were vultures circling in ever-narrowing patterns.

Yet still he trusted...

Still he obeyed...

And only afterward did angels come.

Habakkuk had his desert experience:

Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.

We must trust God at all times, but especially in the desert experiences of our life. When we are tempted to live by sight rather than faith. When we are tempted to depend on ourself rather than Him. When we are tempted to question His love. And when we are tempted to defect.

I pray for us to seek the Holy Spirit for help to see that the Father's word is not only more nourishing than food but more necessary. I pray the Lord will enable us never to doubt His love for us and keep us from being enticed by whatever trinkets satan dangles before us. I pray we will have a thrist to study God's word. But help us realize that it is not knowledge that delivers us...even satan had that...but it is obedience to God's word that keeps us safe through temptation.

I thank the Lord Jesus Christ, that we can come boldly to his throne of grace and there not only find mercy but understanding...
