How do you love God? by having no other God's before him, by not taking his name in vain, by not dealing on idols or graven images, by keeping his Sabbath Day Holy, by keeping his dietary law, by keeping his Feasts, by keeping his cleanliness laws

How do you love your neighbor as you love yourself? You don't steal from them, you don't kill them, you don't lie to them or on them, you don't commit adultery with their spouse, you don't covet their things..

 

Romans 13:8-10

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

This is how these 2 commandments hang all the law.... This is the Love of God that we keep his commandments...

Exodus 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

1John 5:1-3 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

No intelligent person speaks on scripture without interpretation, and I give you the credit of being intelligent.

This of course is interpretation. There is no specific scripture you can quote that equates the keeping of these laws with the love of God. There are many verses in the Hebrew Scriptures that instruct Israel to both "love the Lord thy God" and "keep his commandments" [e.g., Deut. 11:1], those verses do not strip out the ceremonial and sacrificial laws as you have done with your list. Hence, this is your interpretation.

But did Jesus define love of your neighbor as the keeping of the Decalogue? This is what he said about two of the ten commandments:

"Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire... Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." [Matt. 5:21,22,27,28]

Not only did Jesus extend our moral responsibility beyond the limits of "the letter," but more to the point he gave us a specific standard by which we were to express love... that of his own behavior towards us. "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another" [John 13:34]. "As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love" [John 15:9]. "This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you" [John 15:12].

I have quoted the above scripture many times in many of the conversations I had with you and others on BPN. But, as Bro. Gill has explained, you cannot understand the scriptures without interpretation otherwise, you will will be unable to "rightly divide the Word."

Whether you can admit it or not, the primary meaning of the word is elucidation. To elucidate means to throw a light upon... to make clear or plainly seen. That is what you tried to do in your initial post when you defined loving God and loving your neighbor as observing the Torah. This is what most people mean by biblical interpretation.

Now Peter declared that "no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation," and we agree. The key word is the adjective translated "private" in the KJV; the Greek ἴδιος (idios) is the same word from which we get "idiosyncratic" in English. Its use means that Peter is decrying personal, individualistic, or unique meanings. That is the wrong kind of interpretation; there is a right kind of interpretation shown in scripture. I appeal to the example of the Levites in Nehemiah 8:4-8:

"And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up: And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground. Biblical interpretation is in the tradition of those Levites milling through the crowd on that great day; it is giving the sense of the scripture, and causing others to understand.
