Two months after premiering at the New York Film Festival, Ang Lee's anticipated adaptation of "Life of Pi" is out in theaters. Much like the journalists in attendance at the film's debut screening, critics around the country are mostly smitten with Lee's film, which adapts Yann Martel's best-selling novel using groundbreaking 3D and CGI.

"Everything looks beautiful in 'Life of Pi,'" writes Entertainment Weekly critic Lisa Schwartzman in her B+-grade review. "The dangerous animals look beautiful. The terrible storms look beautiful. The crashing ocean waves, the twinkling stars, the wondrous carnivorous island on which the hero at one point lands -- pure  gorgeousness, shimmering with all the wow that superlative 3-D technology has to offer."
Sitting in a sparsely decorated production office on the 20th Century Fox lot in Los Angeles, which has been his editing home for the final six months of the project, Lee has the look of a survivor. Although he appears calm, his hair is ruffled, his eyes express weariness, and he gives a nervous laugh as he talks about the "tiger" that he, too, had to control to complete the project.

His tiger represents much more than the challenging film-making obstacles. Life of Pi, with its budget estimated at $100 to $120 million, is far more expensive than similar literary properties turned to films. 20th Century Fox, which produced the film, is gambling that a broad audience will be pulled in to see what is being marketed as a 3-D adventure story.
Directed by Ang Lee, the project had a number of challenges, starting with the story itself. The protagonist in the novel, written by Yann Martel, spends much of his time stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger as his companion after a major shipwreck. Trying to bring Pi's moving experience to life on film was an admitted risk, but one Lee has impressively managed.
