What Does It Mean that Adam Never Woke Up After Genesis 2:21?

What does it mean that the man Adam never woke up? Last night I realized, even word confirms that Adam remained in a spiritually dark state even after the Lord removed his rib and presented the woman to the man. Personally, I believe both the unauthorized actions of Adam (changing of names in Genesis 2:23) and the inability of Adam to properly discern and act upon the purpose of marriage and the role of this woman within his life and in the garden (Genesis 2:24 is inserted discernment and understanding not from Adam, pointing to parents which Adam had not and to actions which a garden Adam did not), speaks volumes about the true spiritual state of this man even well before the fall.

However, in studying the word last night I realized, scripture does not record that a deep sleeping Adam ever even woke up! Yes he was physically attuned when presented with the woman and therefore we know physically awake, but I believe the word is telling us according even to the Foreknowledge of God that a soon to be jealous, rebellious and un-confessed Adam was electively and even critically still in the dark regarding the things of God and future proper works in righteousness. This of course despite the example set by God among the animals and his “practice set” in properly naming them as well.

(21) “And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh instead thereof; (22) And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. (23) And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. (24) Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (25) And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”

No where between Genesis 2:21 and Genesis 2:22 does word record that this man was no longer in a darkened state portrayed by a deep sleep. Yet a spiritually alert and obedient Adam should have been awake completely and thus demonstrating his righteous state by obediently naming the female “Eve” and not “Woman” as early as Genesis 2:23, by not defiantly changing his own name of “Adam” to “Man” in Genesis 2:23 and by exercising a right ability to discern the purpose and plan of God in marriage. I believe that had an obedient Adam been completely spiritually awake according to the things, plan, and will of God, scripture would also record the man coming to “know” his wife immediately after Genesis 2:25 instead of coming to know her as only a now fallen and punished Adam, compelled by God to be obedient in Genesis 4:1.

What do you think about this? Why does scripture not record that a God who put him into a deep sleep woke him up as well and do you think it matters?
