The recent presidential campaign was an object lesson of what happens when we refuse to let past history intimidate us from making significant change. The past has a way of convincing us to not waste time pursuing what never before has been. So, perhaps God used this historic experience to prepare us for the seemingly insurmountable economic crisis that requires the same hope on the part of each of us in order to survive.

First, let's recognize that Obama's purpose is not to save America, but rather to inspire each of us to never count out possibility on account of probability. Watching the audacity of his hope, should simply give us the desire to be audacious in ours. And, the "Yes We Can" of the revolutionary campaign must become the "Yes I Can" of our individual quest for victory over recession.

I write to encourage you to believe against all odds that you can make it to your future on the other side of this economic storm. You might gain some significant bruises and deep wounds along the way, but you can survive. And, only those who do survive will have the greater opportunity to turn survival into a conquest of prosperity. However, you must apply hope that sustains you during difficult times.

To understand the sustaining power of hope, I recall a message I shared with congregation years ago on the theme, "Don’t Give Up!" At the end of that sermon, I shared the following poem that is even more so relevant today:

Two frogs fell into a deep cream bowl.
One was a very optimistic soul.
The other took the gloomy view.
I will drown, he cried, and so will you.
So with one last despairing cry,
He dropped his head and said goodbye.
But the other frog with a cheery grin,
Said I can't get out, but I won’t give in.
I’ll swim around until my strength is spent,
And having tried I shall die content.
He swam and swam until it seemed,
His struggle began to churn the cream.
On top of the butter at last he stopped;
And out of the bowl he happily hoped.
The moral here is easily found,
If you can't get out… keep swimming around.

My friend, hope is simplified as the commitment to never give up on you. And, its message is, "YES U CAN" overcome this, too.
