Why did the Church stray away from the originals ways of Jesus, and his apostles, and turned into Christianity that is full of paganistic beliefs and practices?

I learned that the church changed when Constantine was in power. Wasn't he of the Babylonian Mysteries (Catholocism) and use to persecute Christians. One day before or during battle he looked up in the clouds and saw the shape of a cross so he took that as a sign and from then on stopped persecuting the Christians but from that he mixed his religion with those followers of Christ and it was fine with them since they weren't being persecuted by him.
There is also a teaching on the Essenes that delineated the answer to this question as well. I have to locate it.
My thinking is that the church never turned away from Yeshua's teaching. Followers of Yeshua were forced to adopt a religion and faith, which Romans and Greeks formed called Christianity. It is sooo phenomenal; however, that Ruwach led many back towards Truths as early as Martin Luther.. bit by bit... we are getting closer.
