Holiness”

What is Holiness?
Strong’s definition of holiness.
1.Sacredness. 2. Physically pure. 3. Morally blameless. 4. Consecrated. 5. Saint. 6.Innocent. 7. Modest. 8. Perfect. 9. Chaste. 10. Clean. 11. Pure.
Vine’s definition of holiness.
1. Sanctification.
a. The separation of the believer from evil things and ways.
b. This sanctification is God’s will for the believer, and His purpose in calling him by the Gospel. Sanctification must be learned from God as He teaches it by His Word, and it must be pursued by the believer earnestly and undeviatingly. It cannot be transferred or imputed; rather, it is an individual possession, built up, little by little, as a result of obedience to the Word of God and of following the example of Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Believers are to be "perfecting holiness in the fear of God", bringing holiness to its predestined end, whereby they may be found "unblameable in holiness" in the (Second Coming) of Christ.
Nelson’s definition of holiness
1. Set apart. (sanctification)
2. God’s high expectations of His people flow out of His own holy nature:
a. "You shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." (Exodus 19:6)
b. "You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy." (Leviticus 19:2).
3. Jesus was the personification of holiness; He reinforced God’s demands for holiness by insisting that His disciples have a higher quality and degree of righteousness than that of the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 5:20). Like Amos and Hosea, Jesus appealed for more than ceremonial holiness: "I desire mercy and not sacrifice" (Hosea 6:6, Matthew 12:7).
4. The theme of sanctification, or growing into God’s likeness and being consecrated for His use, is prominent throughout the Bible. Like Jesus, the Apostles taught that sanctification, or true holiness, expressed itself in patient and
loving service while awaiting the Lord’s return. Peter urged the suffering Christians of the Roman Empire to follow God’s example of holiness in their trials: "As He who has called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct." (1 Peter 1:15).
2] Holiness Is The Character Of God, Leviticus 19:2; 1Peter 1:15,16; Ephesians 5:1
Holiness The Character Of Christ, Romans 8:29; 1John 2:6; Philippians 2:5
Holiness The Way Of The Gospel, Isaiah 35:8
Necessary To Worship God, Job 17:9, Psalms 24:3,4
Holiness None Shall See God Without, Ephesians 5:5; Hebrews 12:14
3] The Word Sanctification Means A “Separation” or a “Setting Apart”
The work of sanctification in God’s people is to be a separation not from sin only, but from the world. Hebrews 12:1. Because of our association with God, Who is holy, we must be separated from all that would defile. Leviticus 20:7,8
II Chronicles 29:5, 15-18 …sanctify now yourselves, and sanctify the house…and carry forth the filthiness out of the holy place.
II Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God,
4] God is too pure to behold sin Habakkuk 1:13, Without holiness, no man can see God Hebrews 12:14. The sinfulness of flesh cannot stand to dwell in His presence.
• Scripture says that that glory of the Lord so filled the house of God that priests could not stand to minister. II Chronicles 5:13-14
• When the Lord appeared to Abram to make his covenant with him Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him Genesis 17:1-3
• The prophet Ezekiel fell upon his face when he beheld the glory of the Lord. Ezekiel 1:28
• Joshua fell on his face to the earth and did worship. Joshua 5:14
• When Isaiah beheld the holiness Of God, he became instantly aware of his own unworthiness before God. Isaiah 6:1-5
• John saw him and fell at his feet as (if) dead. Revelation 1:17
5] Sin separates man from God, alienating him from the kingdom of God. Isaiah 59:1-2; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11: Ephesians 5: 3-5: Revelation 21: 27 Our offering must be in a clean vessel. Isaiah 66:20 …Bring an offering in a clean vessel … II Timothy 2: 20-21 If a man purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use.
Intimacy With God; What Is It?
1. Many of God's people think they know the King, but they don't, and it's cost them their life.
a. I'm not talking salvation, but life...spiritual vitality, power, effectiveness, impact, punch, meaning, fulfillment!
* Jesus said He came to give us life, and life abundantly.
The word "abundantly" means, overflowing.
 Not a dribbling...not up to the brim...but an over- flowing.
b. We know things about God, His word and His ways, but how many of us would say we know God?
 Don't confuse the two because there is a difference between knowing things about God and knowing Him.
 You say... well...what do you mean by "know"?
c. Define, "know"
 the hebrew word for "know" is yada
 the greek word for "know" is ginosko.
Both speak of an intimate knowedege gained by getting up close to something.
d. Which statement more closely describes your relationship with God:
 "I know a lot of things about God." or...
 "I know God personally, intimately. He's real to me. I enjoy God and have fellowship with Him."
Most Christians claim the first statement instead to the second.
* Jesus said:
"And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom Thou hast sent."
-John 17:3
* Jerimiah said:
"Thus says the Lord, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boast, boast of this.....that he understands and knows Me...."
- Jeremiah 9:23
e. Part of the new covenant included the guarantee that we would now be able to know God intimately..... Jeremiah. 31:31- 35
Let Look At God’s Covenant: (The word Covenant in Hebrew,
A contract or agreement between two parties. In the Old Testament the Hebrew word berith is always thus translated. Berith is derived from a root which means "to cut," and hence a covenant is a "cutting," with reference to the cutting or dividing of animals into two parts, and the contracting parties passing between them, in making a covenant (Genesis 15; Jeremiah 34:18, 19).
The corresponding word in the New Testament Greek is diatheke, which is, however, rendered "testament" generally in the Authorized Version. It ought to be rendered, just as the word berith of the Old Testament, "covenant."
This word is used (1) of a covenant or compact between man and man (Genesis 21:32), or between tribes or nations (1 Samuel 11:1; Joshua 9:6, 15). In entering into a convenant, Jehovah was solemnly called on to witness the transaction (Genesis 31:50), and hence it was called a "covenant of the Lord" (1 Samuel 20:8). The marriage compact is called "the covenant of God" (Proverbs 2:17), because the marriage was made in God's name. Wicked men are spoken of as acting as if they had made a "covenant with death" not to destroy them, or with hell not to devour them (Isaiah 28:15, 18).
• The word is used with reference to God's revelation of himself in the way of promise or of favour to men. Thus God's promise to Noah after the Flood is called a covenant (Genesis 9; Jeremiah 33:20, "my covenant"). We have an account of God's covenant with Abraham (Genesis 17, Compare Leviticus 26:42), of the covenant of the priesthood (Numbers 25:12,13; Deuteronomy 33:9; Nehemiah 13:29), and of the covenant of Sinai (Exodus 34:27,28; Leviticus 26:15), which was afterwards renewed at different times in the history of Israel (Deuteronomy 29; Joshua 1:24; 2Chr. 15; 23; 29; 34; Ezra 10; Nehemiah 9). In conformity with human custom, God's covenant is said to be confirmed with an oath (Deuteronomy 4:31; Psalms 89:3), and to be accompanied by a sign (Genesis 9; 17). Hence the covenant is called God's "counsel," "oath," "promise" (Psalms 89:3, 4; 105:8-11; Hebrews 6:13-20; Luke 1:68-75). God's covenant consists wholly in the bestowal of blessing (Isaiah 59:21; Jeremiah 31:33, 34).
