People Before Profits

Since profit demagoguery is a deceptively appealing tool used by scoundrels everywhere, let's de-mystify the concept of profits.
Let's first get its definition out of the way. Profits represent the residual claim earned by entrepreneurs. It's what's left after all other costs - wages, rent, interest - have been paid. The entrepreneur is generally seen as the person who takes risks, innovates and makes decisions. It's important to recognize that profits are a cost of business just as are payments to labor, land and capital. If wages, rent and interest are not paid, labor, land and capital will not be offered; similarly, if profit is not paid, entrepreneurs wouldn't be seen either.
Roughly six cents of each dollar companies take in represent after-tax profits. By far, wages are the largest part of that dollar representing about 60 cents. As percentages of 2002 national income, after-tax profits represented about 5 percent and wages about 71 percent. Far more important than simple statistics about the magnitude of profits is the role played by profits, namely that of guiding resources to their highest valued uses, determined not by some tyrant but by ordinary people's wants and desires. Let's discuss just a few examples.
Remember when Coca Cola introduced the "new" Coke? Pepsi Cola president Roger Enrico called it "the Edsel of the 80's," representing one of the greatest marketing debacles of the 1980's. Who made Coca Cola Company bring back the old Coke? Was it congress, the courts, the president, or other government officials who claim to have our interests at heart? No way. It was the specter of negative profits (losses) that convinced Coca Cola to bring back the old Coke. Thus, one role of profits is to discover what consumers want and if producers make mistakes, correct them.
After the 1992 massive destruction caused by Hurricane Andrew, South Florida stores sold sheets of plywood for twice the price it had sold for prior to the storm. Escalating plywood prices brought charges of price-gouging and prosecutory threats. But look what higher prices and the potential for windfall profits did. Plywood destined to be shipped to the Midwest, West and Northeast suddenly was rerouted to South Florida. Lumber mills increased production. Truckers and other workers worked overtime so as to increase the availability of plywood and other construction materials to Floridians. Rising plywood prices meant something else. All that plywood heading south meant plywood prices rose in other locations thus discouraging "less valued" uses of plywood such as home improvement projects. After all rebuilding and repairing destroyed homes is a "higher valued" use of plywood.

The Agitation of Love...

Agitation is necessary for acceleration

I was having a conversation with one of my minister friends and he shared with me that he was comfortable where he was. Not that he thought he’d “arrived” or anything, but that he’d reached a point where he was satisfied where he was.

I told him that the “comfort zone” is a dangerous place to be. I don’t ever want to be “comfortable;” I want to be ready for action – in a constant state of agitation.

Reminder: If you purchase a home at 7% and refinance a couple of years later at 3%, the first thing that happens in the closing is the original debt is fulfilled by the origination of the new contract.

The debt, itself, doesn't go away but the means by which it is serviced changes. Therefore, you don't have to continue to pay under the old contract because it is superseded by the new one.

Kingdom Building

Far too many folks have no concept of Kingdom building because they have no concept of Kingdom. Too many folks so caught up in religious rigmarole that they completely miss the revelation of relationship.

The Kingdom of God IS NOT religion, it is the Government of God (Isaiah 9:6-7) - yet many reduce what should be a relationship between a loving, powerful, Father and his earthly offspring to a weak, vain, religious experience. Jesus said "upon this rock (truth) I will build my church (ekklesia or Government) and the gates of hell will not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18).

Liberty…and Dependence Upon God

On this day, 236 years ago, Thomas Jefferson and his fellow patriots proved that the pen truly is mightier than the sword with the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. This document – a shot heard around the world – set forth the grievances against, and terms of separation from, the British Crown. The result of this historic document was a revolutionary war that birthed a nation ostensibly dedicated to the ideals of liberty and justice for all.

Now, let’s rewind the historical tape – so to speak – about 6000 years earlier.

God is Able AND Willing to Heal!

If the the person who wants to pray over you or a loved one during an illness is not fully persuaded of not only God’s ABILITY to heal, but also of His WILLINGNESS, you may have to politely decline their request.

Let’s take a walk through Mark 5:35-42…

35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

A bad diagnosis is a FACT but God’s Word is TRUTH (1 Peter 2:24). We must learn to subordinate facts to truth!

Fatherhood - A Kingdom Archetype

Father created us in His image (to look like him) and His likeness (to act like him). God loved the man so much He allowed man to be called “father” as He, Himself, was.

After creating man, Father God blessed him and gave him dominion (Genesis 1:26-28).

A father prepares his son not only for manhood (maturity) but also for the transfer of wealth from the father to the son.

I have frequently taken the position that God hates religion. I studied this in great detail. I concluded that since there was no religion (or, at least, the conventionally accepted manifestation of it) in the Garden of Eden, it had to be something devised by man and, therefore, rejected by God.

I was totally right. And totally wrong.

Whitney Houston

In the days to come, rumor-mongers will be at full-throttle and in high-gear, churning out a range of product from idle speculation to damnable lies regarding the life and death of Whitney Houston. And the sad part about this is that many of these are so-called "Christians."

If you can't say "Amen," say "Ouch."
