Please note that the recipient of the tithe under Biblical law is to be the levite, widow stranger and orphan. In addition to supporting the Levites who had no other inheritance, the tithe was the "welfare system" of Israel. This is how the needy were supported. The "tithe" was only rendered on agricultural products, corn, wine, oil, and domestic livestock. If there were only 9 firstinglings there was no tithe due. Only if there was t 10th animal was that one tithed.

This text is probably repeated more than any other in church every sunday:

Malachi 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house,

Your pastor is misapplying scripture if he/she teaches that based on this text, you owe 1/10 of your income to the church.

The tithe was primarily paid in Jerusalem at the Temple, where there was the storehouse. The local pastor is not a levite nor is the local church is not the storehouse of Malachi. The Hebrew word for "meat" in this text is "food".
